Question About Critical Injuries

Sun 26 Jul 2020, 21:32

It's clear from the rules about permanent defects and insights that they can be activated once per session. However, the rules for how you're affected by critical injuries the mystery you get them (if you're healed from Broken) are less clear, as the text just says that "the injury will affect you for the rest of the mystery". Does this mean that all tests with the relevant skill for the rest of the mystery are modified by the injury?

This seems like the reasonable interpretation to me (and it shouldn't typically affect many skill tests since you both have to become Broken and then be healed from that condition), but I wanted to make sure that this is the intended effect.

When you get a critical injury you will get a defect or an insight depending on the critical injury. You will have this defect/insight for the rest of the mystery. Each defect/insight has first a narrative description of the injury and then a penalty for a dice roll (most often a skill roll). The defect will only affect you once per session, the GM decides when. Insight can be used once per session, it is up to the player to decide when.
Technically this means that even though you have for example, a Knee Injury (14) which have the defect: 'Skewed walk, Agility -1', you will only be affected by it once per session. You as a player don't know when the GM will activate it. When he does activate it, he can choose from a number of choices, one of the choices is the skill penalty (Agility -1 in this example). Once the defect has been activated, the GM can't activate it again until the next session. At the end of the mystery, critical injuries either heals or become permanent.
One tactics for a critical injured player is to avoid situations where the GM can activate the defect. In the example with the knee, avoid situations where agility rolls may be called for.

Ah! I had read it as the Insight/Defect terminology only applied when it becomes permanent, but reading it again that's clearly not the case. Thanks!
