Fast Footwork Talent

Mon 29 Jan 2018, 22:11

I presume when this refers to 'Duck', it means 'Dodge'?

Not sure how this can work in practice - e.g. you've used both actions in a round and have two ranks in this, so two free dodges. After the first dodge you're prone, so how can you possibly dodge again? Even if you start using them before your actions - you'd basically have to expend all your actions getting up. Until you've taken Level 2 of Steady Feet, this isn't really useful at all. I guess it's intended to be the equivalent of the Defender talent, but it doesn't make as much sense to me.

You don't have to be standing to dodge. One of the most cinematic dodging must be rolling away from the blow.

Well, you could make a case for being able roll out of the way of an attack. So with this skill, the first free dodge would make you prone and the second free dodge could be performed while prone. With a negative modifier, of course.

Edit: Fenhorn beat me to it :D

Fair enough, I'd missed that Dodge didn't have standing as a prerequisite.

Don’t know if I like this rule for Dodge... It makes a little bit sense to me that you dive to the ground to duck away from ranged attacks but in melee? There were some suggestions on the forum that were more sensible to me.

The current rule of dodging (you are ending up prone) pretty much takes away dodging from combat, because when you have started to dodge, you pretty much are stuck in an endless loop (dodge - getting up - dodge - getting up ...). So the talent is petty much a must (and to level 2) if you want to use dodge.

One problem if you allow anyone to dodge (without being prone), it might be to good and every idiot in the world will dodge, sometimes instead of parrying and if you then give the dodging talent a bonus to dodge, parrying will be pointless.

One solution is to either give a "normal" character a penalty (-2 for example) when dodging dodging or dodge without any penalty but end up prone. The talent will remove this penalty. This way it is harder to dodge than to parry but you can at least do it without ending up in a losers loop.

Or
At least let the poor dodging fool that has to end up prone, end up prone at near distance so the attacker at least has to do something to attack again (he has to move in again).

The above solution is similar to a suggestion from 9littlebees and I like it way better than the standard prone solution as RAW. Hope really this will be addressed in the official rules.

+1
Several alternatives here that are better than RAW.
