active sensors--detect at range?

Sat 29 Apr 2017, 20:01

If a ship goes active sensor out to a range of 4 can ship with passive sensors now detect it (at 4 instead of the normal 2)? It seems logical but isn't specifically spelled out.

If a ship A moves out of range for the sensors of ship B, ship A disappears off the radar screens on ship B and the encounter is effectively over. See "Disappearing" on page 165.

Just to clarify if ship A and B were fighting at 3CU (active sensor range) and ship A did not spend EP for the active sensors would they loose sight of the other ship?  If ship B who still has active sensors on Tries to lock on ship A would ship A see them again?  and if not if ship B then fired upon ship A would ship A be able to see them then even thought the sensor range of A is only 3CU?

Hiya,

You are correct in regards to ship A losing sight of ship B if they don’t keep the sensors running. Ship B would still be able to lock because its sensors are still active. Ship A wouldn’t automatically see B at this point; they’d have to make a sensor roll to find B again. If B fails that roll, they wouldn’t be able to roll again until some circumstance changes, allowing another roll. Changing distance between the ships, or ship B attacking ship A or adjusting its ship signature are all things that would apply. In this way, dropping out of sensor range could allow for occasional surprise attacks, and could change the outcome of a fight.
