Prayer Roll Modifications Question

Wed 03 Aug 2016, 19:07

PREPARATORY PRAYER AND CHAPELS
If you make time for preparatory prayers to a specific Icon before lunging into the fray, you get a +1 modifier to rerolls when you pray to that same Icon anytime later during the session. If the prayer takes place in a chapel, your modifier becomes +2. This is in effect for the rest of the session, but only when you pray to that specific Icon (see table X.X).
Then:

MODIFICATION
A +1 modifier means you get 1 extra die, a +2 modifiers means you get 2 extra dice, and so on.
So if Hypatia offered a prayer in a temple/chapel before flying into a fray, then needs to pilot her way out of some dire situation (Agility 3 and Pilot 4), she rolls 7 dice. No successes, so she prays to the Traveller to help. Does she then get 9 dice to reroll (still adding 1 point of Darkness to the GM pool)?

Short answer: yes.

Long answer: affirmative.

You can also pray to reroll successful rolls, if you want more successes. Still one point of darkness.

Small gratitude: Thankyou.

Greater gratitude: Bwahahaha... excellent. :mischevious grin:

You can also pray to reroll successful rolls, if you want more successes. Still one point of darkness.
What this refers to is that you can decide to pray/reroll no matter whether you passed or a failed a certain roll.
When you pray/reroll, any sixes in your original roll stay put, they aren't rerolled.
Just clarifying you can't "reroll successful rolls" the way a gamer from some other system might interpret that: there is no risk of your prayer turning the success into a lesser success (or outright failure).
Obviously the more dice you roll in total, the more likely it is that rerolling despite already succeeding makes any sense - you will want to reroll many dice for it to generally be worth the Darkness Point.

Yeah, I carelessly omitted that distinction. You can never get more successes than the total number of dice rolled.

So to modify our example for clarification:

"Hypatia offered a prayer in a chapel before she embarked on adventures in deep dark space. When things get dire, she's steering a scrap heap of a ship that gives no bonus to piloting, and she's throwing 7 dice total (Agility 3 + Piloting 4). Incredibly, she rolls three successes on the first go. But that's not even enough for her, so she sends a little prayer to the Traveller again."

I take it she will get to roll SIX dice in this particular situation: Her skill plus attribute scores plus +2 modifier from chapel praying, minus the three successes she already rolled. :?:

She rerolls four dice normally.

Five dice if she prays beforehand.

Six dice if the beforehand prayer is done in a chapel.
