Improving Attribute ratings during a fellowship phase

Fri 14 Aug 2026, 20:12

Hi fellow Loremasters,

In the core Rulebook 2e there is a little paragraph for the fellowship phase that mentions
"If a new attribute value is attained, the scores of all related abilities and features must be updated accordingly."
But there is no further information about increasing the Attribute ratings.

Has anyone experience in that regard?
Or ideas? :)

Thank you in advance!

No, there are.no know mechanics for improving your Attribute Score after character Generation. This might be them leaving the floor open so they can introduce one in the future.

Hi Börnhard, I am willing to bet this is a matter of recalculating abilities and features resulting from increasing either your hero's WISDOM or VALOUR. E.g. The Ranger virtue Foresight of Their Kindred gives a Dúnadan a number of uses equal to their WISDOM rating, or the wielder of a Superior Keen weapon adds their VALOUR to the Feat Die to see if they achieved a Piercing Blow.

My reasoning:
  • The context for the sentence you quote is the discussion on p 119 under GROWTH, specifically with regard to increasing WISDOM or VALOUR.
  • When the rules refer to STRENGTH, HEART, or WITS, they typically capitalize Attribute and refer to a score or rating.
  • Also, "attribute value" is not capitalized, suggesting they are using it generically to refer to the preceding sentence: They can also buy a rank in either WISDOM or VALOUR, but not in both.

Incidentally, I think it's worth an LM exploring rare narrative circumstances that might cause one of a hero's main Attribute scores to go up or down by 1 point, and necessitate recalculating derived stats. Could a Hobbit gain STRENGTH from drinking Ent-draughts during a Fellowship Phase spent in Fangorn? Might a terrible loss lower a hero's HEART rating permanently? Perhaps several bouts of madness, or a particularly terrible consequence of one, could result in lowering the hero's WITS by 1.

A hero in the campaign I'm running suffered a Wound from a Morgul Blade and nearly perished on the journey to seek healing in an Elf haven. It took a tremendous Skill Endeavor to halt their corruption and forestall them slipping completely into the wraith-world. As a consequence of this close call, I ruled that the revived hero's STRENGTH Attribute would be lowered by 1 permanently, so their Endurance and TN both had to be recalculated.
