In 'Ruins of the Lost Realms' it says that one of the objectives of the Black Númenorians is to discover how to get to Rivendel to take care of Elrond. On the other hand Saruman is also working in the background. My question is: why isn't Saruman simply telling the Black Númenorians how to get to Rivendel? He is the leader of the 'White Council' after all.

Why would he?

Because they both serve Sauron ...

In the period TOR is set, Saruman is still working for the Free Peoples, albeit by increasingly misguided means.

He's a genuine ally of Elrond at this point. Perhaps not a perfect one, but he means well.

I'm not sure he's ever a true ally of Sauron? He's just playing along at the time of the War of the Ring, in the hopes that he can survive the storm, then move on Sauron once he's ready. Folly, but that's part of his character flaws. Hence why the Uruk-Hai took the Ring from the Mordor Orcs.

I don't think it ever aligns with his purposes to betray Elrond like that.

I meant that their intention and they thought they'd taken it, by taking the Hobbits - but really muddled my communication.
