Replacing dead explorers...

Fri 19 Jun 2026, 16:33

I'm about to run the Great Dark for my group, but I'm struggling to figure out what to do about character death. When a character (who's gotten XP during the game) dies, how should you handle making a new one? Is the assumption to create a new Explorer with 0XP, or do you take in to account the total XP the player has earned and give it to the new replacement character?

Thanks.

A new character starts with 0 xp yes.

Some groups do let a new PC start with some xp if their former PC died. Exactly how to do this will be up to you, but the easiest way of doing this is to let the new PC start with 1 xp per session, so if a PC dies in session 10, the players new PC will start with 10 xp. Another (probably more generous) method is to keep a tally of how many xp a PC has earned and when the PC dies, the new PC will start with half that.

FL have games that do allow for a new PC to start with some experience (Dragonbane for example), but I don't think Coriolis have such rules.
