Imagination (any restraints?)

Fri 10 Apr 2026, 23:35

Near the end of the DragonBane (Core set) rule book, it allows the reader to "be creative" and whip up strange new places and storylines. But how

much imaginativeness can be exercised within the confines of the game? Can you, for example, introduce new beasts and monsters. What about

devices? Under the pretext of "time has passed and craftsmen have made new inventions" can you introduce, for example, a

battering ram to break down doors, or siege equipment like catapults....etc?

Again, I've noticed quite a few people on this forum "homebrew" and was wondering, generally, what guidelines they implement when they do it.

"Comrade, in the dungeon, always be ready for the worst. If it doesn't occur, excellent, then you may be pleasantly surprised. But if circumstances work against you, then you're ready for it. Only a fool enters a dungeon with their guard down "

The limits on homebrew are basically between you and the other people at your table. When creating a monster, I find it helpful to look at the existing ones as a kind of guideline for how much HP/armor to give it, or how much damage its attacks should do, but there isn't, like, a formula behind them.

What Nincilla said.

One piece of advice I'd give with regards to monsters is this:
Remember that straight damage above 2xHP can kill a character without any death-rolls, so limit the number of monsters that do 5D10 points of damage a little.
