Since you're in the Coriolis The Great Dark forum and not the Coriolis Third Horizon forum, I'll reply assuming you do indeed mean the former.
Pros:
- Incredibly rich setting. Lots of politics, factions, richly detailed main city (Ship City). Very immersive.
- Highly focused play and theme. All character play what are essentially highly trained explorers and archeologists who's main purpose is exploring the very deadly ruins of an ancient precursor race that all disappeared many eons ago. Theme is a combination of hope, scarcity, and more than a little cosmic horror.
- Your group has a bird, lol. Okay, i'll elaborate: These ruins are dangerous because of something called Blight, which is a dangerous snow like substance that essentially robs people of their identity and will to live. They cease being what they are and start becoming ... something else. But some time ago, your small civilization discovered these ancient bio-engineered birds called Garuda that have the ability to detect and even temporarily eliminate Blight in a location to make exploration much much safer than it previously was. And the bird can have all kinds of other cool abilities as well. So if the idea of having a group 'pet' that can grow stronger over time and has all kinds of cool abilities interests you, you'll like this.
- Customizable shuttle and land vehicle.
- An amazing campaign that unlocks tremendous secrets with a crazy finale.
Cons:
- Not a sandbox game. Great Dark, unlike its predecessor, does not support sandbox do anything be anyone kind of play. It's much more focused on a specific role instead of allowing players to be mercenaries doing their own thing.
- Much less travel independence. In Great Dark, the group all get their own short range shuttle and land vehicle. What they don't get is their very own FTL capable ship. There are FTL capable ships, but they are owned and run by the different factions. So you only get to go where you want if the ship was either already going there, or because you somehow gained crazy leverage on the captain to ask for these kinds of favors since FTL trips take weeks at a minimum.
- While Great Dark is still extremely political, it's not as religious or spiritual as Third Horizon. That's not to say that there aren't religions in Great Dark, but they are secondary in the story compared to Third Horizon.
