Long weapons free attack(s)

Thu 29 Jan 2026, 16:21

Dear community,
a question about Long weapons and their combination with Pole Weapon Mastery
From page 152:
Long: The weapon has the advantage of superior length and reach, giving the wielder a Free Attack each turn against one new melee opponent, ...
- When should this happen? During the engaging opponent turn or during the player character turn?
From page 120: Adept - Reaction. The character receives a Free Attack against all enemies who come into range of melee combat – whether it is the enemy who engages the character or vice versa is irrelevant.
Is this giving one free attack against each engaging enemies (during their turn), plus a single free attack from the Long weapon trait?

Thanks for your time

Hello
Not an expert but before locking into RAW, I’d ask how it feels in play. If the character starts dominating every multi-enemy encounter, a small house rule tweak keeps the spirit without breaking balance. Maybe allow both but cap it at one Free Attack per enemy per round to keep things from spiraling.

You get the free attack when you engage in melee, no matter if it's the enemy or player that moves.
1. Enemy enters melee range of the player, or player enters melee range of the enemy.
2. Player rolls for free attack.
3. If the enemy survives they can continue their turn.

The difference pole-arm mastery does is that you can roll for a free attack every time you enter melee. Without pole-arm mastery you're only allowed to make one free attack from the long quality per turn.
