I'm looking at character creation, and there's a origin hit die and a class hit die. Do you just use whichever one is best? The beginning of the origin section say that hp is based on your origin hit die and not the class hit die, but then why is there a class hit die?

You can use either but it should be the same for your whole group. So you could all use the Origin Hit Die or the class based ones. The way base 5e works is with the class based ones, so the ruleset includes them, but it's designed with the use of the Origin Hit Dice in mind. But if your group would prefer to use the "normal" method the game allows for that too.

My group used the Origin hit die method and it does mean that the lone melee fighter we have, who is a human and has a d8 hd, is a little squishier than if they were a 5e Fighter or Barbarian getting a bigger die.
