Creating a military chaplain

Mon 17 Nov 2025, 20:49

Hi all!

I'm looking for advice creating a military chaplain, and I'm a bit hesitant how to go about it. The idea is to have a character who is very intent on humanitarian efforts but forced into taking up arms to survive, and all the psychological issues that ensue.

The outline of what I'm thinking about is the following (using the American military campaign as a starting point):
  • Raised in a deeply religious family.
  • Became a catholic priest.
  • Joined the army to serve his country.
  • Becomes a military chaplain.

Thoughs about what rules to use (pending of the approval of the referee):
  • Intellectual childhood.
  • First career is Sciences Education, representing becoming a catholic priest.
  • Second career and forward, Officer.

The idea hinges on getting the Scientist speciality and having the referee approve it to apply to religion despite the rules stating it to apply to natural sciences only. Then if possible, get the specialities Frontline Leader and Councillor.

Any suggestions or opinions?

Talk to the GM about the concept. Ask why the character has Ranged Combat or removing the requirement.

Instead of Scientist, discuss Counselor as your specialty. This is what the pastoral branches of the clergy are supposed to do. You may even want to be Liberal Arts; Persuasion is probably a more appropriate skill than Tech for the role. Otherwise, Historian is probably a better specialty than Scientist for what you want your character's capability to be or develop a custom Persuasion specialty.

Military branch is going to be CSS/Officer. Again, discuss with the GM tweaks to the available specialties, perhaps by replacing inappropriate ones others.

I have to ask, in what kind of situations do you imagine coming across a phenomenon that requires religious knowledge where you'd roll TECH to understand it?
