It has been established that Greatships are....well, really big, and they have a few hundred people aboard. When travelling, the PCs still need to participate in the travel hazard stuff, so the PCs are part of the crew, and not like, super special separate Delve crewmen. Therefore, it is entirely possible that the PCs may have a rival Delve crew on their own ship, and both crews might be racing one another to uncover stuff, or one might be sent to help out another crew, and so on.

Now, is my interpretation correct, or did I miss something like "There are only five people crazy enough to go Delving on each Greatship, and they just happen to be the PCs."?

On a Greatship I would expect at least 4 Delve crews and on a Cruiser I have 2.
I have been working on a scenario where there is a rival crew onboard the same cruiser as the player characters but they are operating under cover, so they appear friendly and the “competition “ for the interesting tasks on the journey offers some possibilities for interactions with the other team.

Reading Flowers of Algorab, it has multiple crews on each ship. 2 to 4 as suggested by PeterRandel seems about right.
