What does "LV" stand for?

Fri 14 May 2021, 19:24

The Search function won't let me search for "LV", so sorry is this has been asked and answered.
What does the LV (and other designations) mean?

Cameron said it's a random prefix ... means nothing.
But you could say ...
1) LIFE VIABLE (LV) planet with good temperatures and liquid water, target for terraforming
2) LOCATION VECTOR (LV)
3) a joke for the final one, LOVELY VACATION (LV) ahahah!

"LIFE VIABLE" was thrown up a long time ago.

If the designations come from real world astronomy conventions, the abbreviation is for the name of the particular astronomical survey, catalog, or expedition. So LV-426 was the 426th item in the "LV" expedition/survey, which would be shorthand for the organization, telescope, university, individual or ship that conducted the exploration or built the catalog.

Thanks guys!
I guess I won't worry too much about it then when naming and numbering planets. Probably go with it being the W-Y scans that originally recorded the systems or something.

Yeah, like the others said here, it most likely means Life Viable.
Though LV in the original film was meant to be a shorthand of Leviticus. So LV-426 was Leviticus 4:26, "He shall burn all the fat on the altar as he burned the fat of the fellowship offering. In this way the priest will make atonement for the leader's sin, and he will be forgiven."

Hmm, then lacking any official meaning, I'll combine ideas here. (For some reason I'm not a fan of "Life Viable")
The Leviticus is a sensor & telescope drone ship (or array of ships/satellites) using AI to map the heavens. The LV designated objects were all originally identified by it.

I don't believe Cameron ever originally intended LV to be Leviticus. As Arthur Dallas said above - it's a random prefix.

I do like the idea of a probe named Leviticus.

Which is why not much is known about Xenomorphs, since what happens on LV stays on LV.

I assumed it was just a fictional star catalog prefix like "L" for "Luyten" (survey of stars by someone called Luyten, so "L237" etc).
