Re: ALIEN Colonial Marines PDF Bug Report Chapters 1-5

Wed 12 May 2021, 01:04

Hey gang! Super excited to dive into the new book. Sorry if these have been repeats of what other people have found, I'm just using a draft as my 'note-taking' as I go.

p.9
  • If there is any problem a colony can’t handle on its own, the UA throws the colonial marines at it to see if they stick.
The rest of this intro has 'Colonial Marines' as a proper noun, so I assume it should be capitalized?
  • The other services can only accomplish co-dependently what the colonial marines can do on their own.
    As above.
p.17
  • After several incidents, the fanatical Earth Savers—a group dedicated to forcing mankind back to earth—becomes classified as a terrorist organization by the FBI.
I assume Earth should be capitalized
p.19
  • An endpoint is at 2164 but it has no line, and there are no boxouts for 2164
  • A line is missing from the 2165 boxout "America's Backhand" and the timeline.
p.21
  • ...all worlds at a distance greater than 20 parsecs from earth as lost.
As above, I assume Earth should be capitalized
p.22
  • ...both allied with and against the colonial marines and the royal marine commandos.
I assume these organizations should be capitalized.
p.23
  • BioNational and Weyland-Yutani scientists join forces with the USCMC
On p.28 of this book, and p.239 of the core rulebook their name is spelt 'Bionational' without the capitalized 'N'. I'm not sure if the implication is they were different companies or changed their name though.
p.30
  • THE BATTLE OF CETI EPSILON IV AND THE BETELGEUSE CAMPAIGN Epsilon Ceti and Betelgeuse—the battles that everyone has heard of...
Unsure, but Ceti Epsilon just flipped its name around. Is that fine? or did one get renamed and not the other? The timeline lists it as Epsilon Ceti, too, so I assume, Ceti Epsilon is at fault.
p.38
  • The colonial marines maintain an advanced state of readiness at all times...
Again, not sure if this should be capitalized.
p.43
  • CBRN TEAM: The Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear defense fireteam
Missing an oxford comma after Radiological.
p.53
  • Sounds good, now, doesn’t it.
Unsure: should this end with a question mark?
p.56
  • You are trained to assess, contain, and quarantine chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear threats.
    Again, missing an oxford comma.
Updated: Removed dupes of what was reported before me

... UA is drawn into the conflict by the succession of planet Helene 215...
I wonder if succession should be secession?

While I discovered that there is an alternative spelling for "mannequin" today, even that alternative is spelled manikin, not manakin.

Pg 56 - CBRN SPECIALIST under Talents it has Weapon Specialist (M230 Incinerator). Should be M240.
Pg 68 - WEYLAND-YUTANI NSG23 ASSAULT RIFLE describes the 3WE troops as ROYAL SPACE MARINES not Royal Marine Commandos.
Pg 68 - ID23 Underbarrel Incinerator Unit - undercarriage of an assault rifle would probably read better as underbarrel attachment rail of an assault rifle - Aircraft have undercarriages.
Pg 72 - Query - the stats for Weyland 72A Light Energy Weapon & the M78 PIG Phased-Plasma Infantry Gun seem to have been copy and pasted with the exception of the cost. Is this correct?
Pg 133 - Hicks' rank is given incorrectly as Lance Corporal not Corporal - the quote line should also be "Its good for you boy. Eat it." and not "Eat it, boy, it’s good for you.”
Pg 220 - Under Generic NPC's, all Colonial Marines appear to have been issued with MA4E Pistols, rather than M4A3 Pistols.
Pgs 136 & 152 - Is Todlab XLI in Garrison System Gamma the one from Aliens - Tribes? If so it should be TodLab LXI (61)
*Disappointed that the Harrington Assault Rifle on Pg 29 does not appear in the equipment section with stats and the NSG23 has no AP ability, whilst the F90 has no bonus to use and seems to be equipped with an array of sighting devices. The F90 is also heavier than the NSG23 without having any attachments. And where are the UPP tanks?

p.23 "The '84 Border Bombings" could use a right-facing single curly quote instead ("The 84 Border Bombings"), as it's abbreviated based on "2184"
p.29 & 30 "The ‘67 Buyout" > "The 67 Buyout," for similar reasons
p.33 The Weyland-Yutani shuttle's name should be Erebus, not Eberus
p.38 "milktoast" should be spelled "milquetoast"
p.39 Inconsistent capitalization of the MSF locales; SOL and ERIDANI are all-capped, while Herculis is title-cased. (They should probably all be title-cased, as Sol and Eridani are not acronyms like MSF is.)

Pg. 9:
The United States Colonial Marine Corps]
There is a bracket at the end of that line, I don't see an opening one, so it's definitely out of place.

for Pg. 9, “The United States Colonial Marine Corps] should instead end with a closed quote mark ["], not a bracket []]

Hi, firstly can I say that this product looks like a fantastic addition to the game and contains a huge amount of background material for the Alien universe. It was definitely worth the wait and my thanks to the whole team: writers, illustrators, graphic designers, editor, etc. for such a superb job.

Since you have asked for additional eyes to scan the text I've made a list of typos/errors as I speed read through the book. Hopefully I'm not being picky, just trying to find as many as I can to help out:
Chapters 1 & 2
P.8
  • Box 1, para.1, line 6:
warped helmet to your skull, while bioweapons
Should this be hyphenated as bio-weapons because it is a contraction of biological weapons? If yes, consider search and replace as this occurs throughout the book
P.9
  • Para. 2, line 1:
The United States Colonial Marine Corps] is
Additional closing square bracket after Corps
  • Para. 5, line 2:
throws the colonial marines at it
Colonial Marines is a proper noun in the rest of this text should it have capital C and M here?
  • Para. 7, line 1:
    Sound’s boring, I know.
No apostrophe required here for Sounds, no ownership and the verbose isn't "sound is boring"
  • Para. 9, line 3:
only accomplish co-dependently what the colonial marines can do on
See item 2 above about Colonial Marines
P.10
  • Box 2, para. 3, line 7:

    breath should be breathe
P.13
  • Body text, para. 3, line 5:
technically they own whatever wetwear is attached to it
Should this be wetware as in software/hardware rather than wetwear as in clothing/apparel?
P.17
  • Box 1, para. 5, line 9:
back to earth—becomes classified as a terrorist
Should be Earth as it refers to the proper noun planet and not the ground material
PP.18 & 19
  • Box 2113
The 20 Parsec Limit is set. A Network Expansion Program begins.
Line points to a position on timeline closer to 2123
  • Timeline around point 2164: Dot and line appear but aren't linked to any textbox, distinct from quinquennial timeline marks
  • Box 2165: No line from textbox linking to timeline
P.21
  • Box 1, para. 1, line 6
missions are also declared overdo. Only the rimward

  • Box 2, para. 5, line 1:
The HD85112 system is mined with detection

THE BATTLE OF CETI EPSILON IV AND THE BETELGEUSE CAMPAIGN Epsilon Ceti and Betelgeuse
Drake's T-shirt from Aliens references Cetii Epsilon IV; potential spelling error from canon plus misname on line 3 with "Epsilon Ceti" in the body text and on page 19 Box 2172 lines 4 & 5 "Epsilon Ceti IV"
P.32
  • Box 2, para. 2, line 7
keeping force of colonial marines is sent in.
    Proper noun for Colonial Marines
P.33
  • Para. 3, line 1
    EBERUS INCIDENT Former J’Har rebels
    Para. 3, line 3
Yutani shuttle Eberus. The situation is resolved
Should this be EREBUS INCIDENT and shuttle Erebus referencing the Latin?
Since this is getting long I'll cover a Chapter per post. Feel free to ignore my comments, but my intention is only to help.

Here goes Chapter 3:
P.38
  • Box 1, para. 1, line 1

  • Box 1, para.1, line 4

Finishing off with Chapter 4 and 5 together, these character creation rules look great and allow for a little flavour between Marine characters (I love the event tables, the gear, it's all pitched well).

Chapter 4:
P.53
  • Background text, para. 2, line 2
all that, but also get to shoot one of these puppies—the M41A1 Pulse
Should this be M41A Pulse to match the designation on p.121 Core Rulebook? Saying that M41A1 is on page 8, box 2, para 2, line 8 and page 11, box 1, para 3, line 12
P.56
  • CBRN Specialist, Talents
    Weapon Specialist (M230 Incinerator)
Should read Weapon Specialist (M240 Incinerator)
P.58
  • Event Table A, entry 11-13, line 2
You kept hold of this useful tool, which works so well it give an additional...
Should this be ...works so well it gives an...?
P.61
  • Rank Table and Typical Positions: You might get some pushback about ranks and positions, I suggest GMs and players sort this out themselves based on what they want to do, IRL material, etc. but a warning might stave off militaria pedants (it's a game!)
P.62
  • Basic Gear, 6th entry
M3 Personal Armor With Built-In Personal Data Transmitter
Core Rulebook p.128 lists this as M3 Personnel Armor?
  • Specialty Gear, 3rd entry
AUTOMATIC RIFLEMAN: M56 Smart Gun, Head-Mounted Sight
Should this list as M56A2 Smart Gun?
  • Specialty Gear, 5th entry
CBRN SPECIALIST: M41A Pulse Riflfle, U4 Firebombs, CBRN Kit, UDEP Poncho, HAZMAT Suit
Earlier references in Chapter 3 & 4 indicate these marines use the M240 Incinerator, but it's not in their list of Specialty Gear?

I love the experimental gear quirks ("no pain, no gain"). Chapter 5:
P.68
  • Box 1, para 4, line 6
While not as accurate as the M41, the AK-4047 is
Should the serial number designation be M41A?
  • Box 1, para 8, line 6
assault rifle of the 3WE Royal Space Marines, the
Should this be 3WE Royal Marine Commandos?
  • Box 1, para 8, line 10
    piercing M41Pulse Rifle—prompting W-Y to sell
Should this be M41A Pulse Rifle?
  • Box 1, para 8, lines 4 & 5
the ID23 flamethrower easily connects to the undercarriage of an assault rifle
This should read the ID23 flamethrower easily connects to
the underbarrel attachment rail of an assault rifle
    ?
P.69
  • Rifle table, 3rd entry, Weapon field
    Norcomm AK-104s
Should the serial number designation be upper case AK-104S? Error also occurs for the image title on page 70
  • Rifle table, 5th entry, Comment field
Full auto, I23 Incinerator Unit included.
Should this be Full auto, ID23 Incinerator Unit included.? Error repeated in Comment text for image on page 70
  • Rifle table, 6th entry, Comment field
Fire Intensity 7, included in the N23 Assault Rifle.
Should this be Fire Intensity 7, included in the NSG23 Assault Rifle.?
P.71
  • Box 1, para 8, lines 5 & 6
If not, it fires as planned (STRESS LEVEL + for the user).
Are we missing a number here for the Stress Level increase?
P.74
  • Explosives and Ammunition table, 5th Entry, Comment field: Should this include Fire Intensity 12 to match all other weapons that have Fire damage?
  • Explosives and Ammunition table, 8th Entry, Comment field
Triggered at Engaged Rang. Against the
Should be Triggered at Engaged Range.
  • Box 1, para. 2, line 7
Roll a Stress Die at the start of each Round—on a [6], the gas dissipates.
Should this be a facehugger symbol instead?
P.76
  • Uniforms table, 4th Entry, Fatigues field
    MB3 Standard Boots
    Should be M3B Standard Boots
  • Uniforms table, 7th Entry, Fatigues field
    Platypus Fins
Should this be M11 Platypus Fins for consistency?
P.78
  • Box 1, para. 2, line 7
Each CCC5 comes standard with an AK-104 attached
Should this be AK-104S as the AK-104 is the non-pulse variant?
  • Body Armor table, 5th Entry, Comment field
    OBSERVATION –1, AK-104 attached
    As above

A small comment here concerning rules development: the U4A2 on page 71 has similar stats to the U1 Grenade Launcher from p.125 of the Core Rulebook. It looks like the underslung U1 on the M41A Pulse Rifle is analagous to the US M203/M320 single shot underbarrel grenade launcher system (but can fire several grenades before reloarding to match the Aliens film) and the U4A2 is like the US M32 Multiple Grenade Launcher, does this mean the individual unit U1 is supposed to be like the US M79 "Thumper" Grenade Launcher? If so, should the individual unit version of U1 be revised to have "Single Shot"?
