The venom spiked tail problem.

Sun 01 Mar 2020, 23:29

Now I love the Alien Rpg I really do, any of you that follow my actual play on the forum will know, but during my current little delve into the universe I found my one and only problem. 'The venom spiked tail' This the Aliens use in the game to paralyse victims, capture them and bring them back to the hive. Well this bugs me a little, it doesn’t seem, feel or sound very alien, too my mind anyway. I have seen no evidence for this really other than In the old Alien rpg and even then it bugged me.

So what I have done is simply replaced the 'Venom spiked tail.' With its ‘Paralysing Venom.’ Too something a little more appropriate and fitting based on the many comics, novels and films I have read and reread recently. It is now. ‘A Special Resin.’ That the xenomorphs vomit up and place over the victims mouth and nose, all with the exact same effects as ‘The venom spiked tail.’ What do you guys think, I am literally just using it on a character now with the runner in my solo game and I find it rather fitting.

I think you're trying to fix what ain't broke, especially since we see in Aliens that they do capture and plaster-to-the-walls some victims; we only see the results, not the means. The venom tail is quite reasonable. Even if they still facehugger them, having them alive but paralyzed is useful to the hive. Killing them for anything other than food or reproduction isn't.

Cameron invented the tail stinger for Aliens.  Gorman was originally stung by an Alien tail instead of getting bonked on the head with some boxes.

It was absent from River of Pain where the Aliens vomited goop in the faces of victims which knocked them out.

That's something I never knew about Gorman, pretty cool, although he was in the APC the whole time, the canisters that fell on him were in there. I have listened to river of pain as background ambience while writing, I knew I had read or heard about the aliens putting the goo over there faces which knocks them out somewhere. I suppose its just me, to each his own.

An Alien broke in during the escape.  This was the original script for the sequence.

INT./EXT. APC    104-
    105

Something lands on the roof with a metallic clang.

Gorman has plastered himself against a wall, as far
from the door as possible.  A latch lever behind his
head turns.  The small hatch against which he was
leaning is ripped away and SOMETHING snatches him out
the opening  He disappears to the waist with a shriek,
legs kicking.  The alien clings to the roof, pulling
him out.  Its tail whips over, scorpionlike, and
buries a four inch stinger in Gorman's shoulder.
Hicks grabs a joy stick at the FIRE-CONTROL CONSOLE
and turns it rapidly.  On the roof the alien looks up
as servo-motors whir.  A remote control turret cannon,
a 20mm chain-gun, swivels toward it in a curt arc.
VOOM.  The creature is blasted off the vehicle's
armored back and tumbles away.  Gorman, slumped
   unconscious, is dragged back inside.

They discuss it later.

Ripley joins Hicks who is bent over Gorman, checking
   for a pulse.

    HICKS
    He's alive.  I think he's paralyzed.

    VASQUEZ
    He's fucking dead!

She grabs Gorman by the collar, hauling him up roughly,
ready to pulp him with her other fist.

    VASQUEZ
(to Gorman)
Wake up pendejo!  I'm gonna kill
    you, you useless fuck!

Hicks pushes her back.  Right in her face.

    HICKS
Hold it.  Hold it.  Back off, right
    now.

Vasquez releases Gorman.  His head smacks the deck.
Ripley opens Gorman's tunic, revealing a bloodless
   purple puncture wound.

    RIPLEY
    Looks like it stung him.

I seem to recall the spiked tail with the venom made it into the novel version of Alien.

Not sure but i don't think so.  There wasn't really any place in the Alien novel to address a venom spiked tail.  I don't think it's ever mentioned that it has a tail in the Alien novel.  Alan Dean Foster is pretty non-specific when describing the creatures in that book and some descriptions point to earlier concepts (like the facehugger with a single eye).

The tail stinger did make it into the Aliens novelisation though, described much as it is above.

Sounds cool, I haven't really read the books, tend to have the audio books on in the background at times and I have poured over the comics. Tomato, Tamato.
