Chariots of the God's first session and feedback

Sun 18 Aug 2019, 01:31

Got my first session of Alien tonite!

I removed agendas completely and didnt include the android. I pretty much treated this as a normal (standard) roleplaying oneshot which worked great! I dont want to take anything away from the writers, Cinematic Play is definitely something unique in roleplaying that I want to try out in full but both me and my group is new to roleplaying so I just wanted to keep it simple.

Im not gonna go into details as its too much to cover but ill just say we all had a blast! The game has so much tension and suspense built into its mechanics it almost runs itself!
The game ended in a dual scene where two players fought a neomorph as they were trying to flee the Cronus through the corporate EEV, at the same time the third player worked furiously to break the umbilical cord and try to run Cronus thrusters to get away from the Montero as it was counting down to self destruct.
It didnt work out XD

One bit of feedback:

I love how the xenomorphs are super easy to handle in combat. Roll on their attack table, and follow the instructions.
But I would love for that table to use 2D6 and use the probabilities of that roll to make it so that the extremes wasnt evently distributed.
Right now its an equal chance that the "monster" will hiss and glare at you, as it will attack you with 10 dice were a hit will instantly kill you! Would love for more "regular" attacks to be more probable, and those extremes less common.

All in all, even though I was excited for this game since its announcement, after playing this first session im super eager to get the full release! Amazing game with a great ruleset!

As a GM for this game (and it others) just because I roll something doesn't mean I dish it out. Most of the time I follow the dice but if the timing isn't right for the story I'm not about fudging it. I think the system works fine as it is in my opinion. I am hoping for a wider range of actions though in the finished version rather than 6 but we'll see.

That spawned a thought - requires no real changes to the tables... 3d6 keep middle. This gives (per anydice) a nice rounded middle without changing the tables. If you want to tweak it directionally, substitute 1d4 to shift low, and 1d8 to shift high, or both to narrow the middle...

True but I do all my rolling public and dont like to mess with results just to save (or hinder) the players. I want them to feel that the rules, when applied, are honest and indifferent. Especially in cinematic play where everything is supposed to be deadly dangerous.
I would just like to see the xeno attacks distributed in a non linear way.

Another little feedback suggestion I just remembered...
On the map of the Cronus, that is suggested to be handed to the players, the EEV in the corporate suite is labeled as just that, EEV. This is supposed to be "secret" and masked as a wardrobe/wardroom. As my players was searching for EVA suits they were looking over the map and asked about the EEV, and I tried scoffing it aside as "I dont know, something related to luxury suites and such" :D

Maybe relabel it?

I think I'll try 3d6, keep middle for the xenomorph attack table next time I run.  Great idea.

As for the EEV, I relocated it to Deck D, replacing the EQU SHED.  I also replaced the WORKSHOP/ENGINEERING icon with an ESCAPE POD icon.  In the two times I ran the Chariot of the Gods scenario, my PCs never explored Deck D; had no reason to.  I want to transform that empty space on Deck D into a classic xenomorph nest (full-on Gigeresque biomechanical vision) and one last hurdle for our PCs before they can finally escape.

The old location where the EEV was on Deck B, was erased and became nothing of note (a closet or WC, if you prefer).
