Re: Alien take on MYZ-engine

Just heard the Mud & Blood Interview (first 50 minutes)

At first I thought "All Quiet on the Western Front", but than a lot of clearer and new details come out.

Setting:
  • Prometheus / Covenant events are part of the canon, but not fokus
  • Campaign fokus on exploration, cinematics on horror
  • Each campaign-concept comes with its own mission generator
  • There will be shipbuilding like in Coriolis
  • Systems could be generated by random
  • Cinematic mode knows Victorypoints for reaching agenda goals.
  • no Meta-Currency like Willpoints, Darknesspoints, Luckpoints,....
  • For died PCs there are often replacement NPCs.
Mechanics:
  • There will be only one color of dice for attributs, skills and gear and only D6s.
  • Stress dice counting as additional regular dice (different color).
  • Panic effects will become harder when having more stress (D6 + stress)
  • Panic effects could become permanent (13+)
  • Criticals are more deadly (Instant Death on 63-66)
Characters:
  • Androids are possible as PC (Xenomorphs are not. ;) )
  • Talents are used.
  • Consumable are abstracted

Hi, I'm Matt from Mud & Blood. A few corrections.

There aren't one type of dice, there are two. Base and Stress Dice, in different colours.

Consumables are quite different to Forbidden Lands. It's abstracted like in FBL, but there are no polyhedral dice. Not sure I'm allowed to say more... 😉

Curious. I'm not one to go for podcasts much, but this comment intrigues me. What made you think of AQotWF?

Oh, translation!?  :P

Are we talking about food itself or something else—  :?
FBL is the only FL game I haven't read so I'm lost with this comment.
Elucidation to relieve my confusion?

Nothing. In Germany we use the phrase "Im Westen nichts Neues" whenever we want to express, that we do not expect to hear new information, just repetition of already known.

Most likly lost in translation :) They explained that consumables (food, water, I guess mainly ammunition) is not counted bit by bit, but that you use a system just like in Forbidden Lands just without D8 / D10 / D12

Explaination: In Forbidden Lands you won`t count your arrows when shooting. You are using rescource dice. Everytime you shoot, you roll a die and on a 1 or 2, the die degenerates to the next small type. From max. D12 to D6. And when you roll a one or two on a D6 the have finally shot your last arrow. This avoids book keeping and makes rescources a bit more unpredicatable.

Thank you. I didn't know of that mechanic in Forbidden Lands, and yet, two days ago, someone in our group mentions keeping track of resources using the d12/d8/d6/d4 reductive manner.
Filed it away for future use and now...

A great way to find a medium between obsessive counting and careless handwaving.

After listening to the podcast, I am struck with the evident idea that this system's mechanics is pre-made for a scenario of The Thing.* Hidden agendas would be the mechanic for becoming a thing, stress factors that both help and hurt...

As a lifelong devoted d%/CoC/BRP adherent, the MYZ system is the only one that has ever seemed more attractive in what amounts to 40 years playin' this stuff. I love seeing the various shades the engine takes when powering different game universes.

[* = Alien + The Thing + Blade Runner. Kind of a holy trinity of sf film/rpg source material, aintit?]

The Gear Breaking mechanic is one that I hope is a part of the space truckers setting. Something breaks on a long haul, it needs to be jury rigged or something else has to be found/modified for the job.

If not, it's yet another system I'd house rule that into.
To me, that is one of the most revolutionary mechanic to any crunch I've read. I've played with malfunction on 99-00% rolls and similar ilk, but the gear damage and breage in a post-apocalyptic setting is perfect.
There are no gear dice as such in Alien

I know.
Just think it's a great feature in the MYZ engine.
And there might a gear breakage system house ruled in our games. :-)
