Renting a forge?

Tue 14 Jul 2020, 20:03

How much would renting a forge cost (e.g. in Amber's Peak)? I don't see a price in the book. 1sp per day? per quarter? What is a reasonable price?

I feel like there would be a negotiation. Like corkage fee at a restaurant. The smith would want to know what you’re using their forge for and probably charge you a percentage of what they’d charge you for the same service. And that’s assuming they’re not busy or else you’re paying them for the time they’re not using their own forge for their own work.

Agreed. Plus, your are essentially asking a specialist, who likely hand crafted his own tools, if you can then use his own tools. Not just the fire of the forge but the whole work shop. I expect most blacksmiths to refuse unless you tempt them with a pretty significant offer.

Keep it less than the price of simply buying the item in question but I wouldn’t make it drastically cheaper. And this is an adventure game, maybe instead of coin, there’s something the blacksmith needs their help with... A favor for a favor.

Smithing is the smiths livelyhood. They would probably want the players to pay for their services, rather than doing the work themselves. I would require them to get on the good side of the smith before it would even be worth discussing.

After that I'd probably have them pay 1-2 silver per quarter, depending on the size of the town, and the greedyness of the smith.
