Converting 5E to Forbidden Land

Sun 06 Oct 2019, 18:24

I have a project coming up where I am going to be converting some creatures from DnD 5E to Forbidden Lands so I have been doing some thinking around conversions.  Have a look below and let me know what you think: (apologies for the formatting)

Attributes: Max attributes for PCs in 5E is 20, 30 for monsters.  Fbl has a max for PCs of 6.  Devide 5E by 3.5 to get Fbl attribute.

5E                Fbl
Attributes Attributes

1                  1
2                  1
3                  1
4                  2
5                  2
6                  2
7                  2
8                  3
9                  3
10                3
11                4
12                4
13                4
14                4
15                5
16                5
17                5
18                6
19                6
20                6
21                6
22                7
23                7
24                7
25                8
26                8
27                8
28                8
29                9
30                9

5E has 6 attributes,             Fbl has 4 Attributes

Strength+Constitution/2.  = Strength
Dexterity                          = Agility
Intelligence+Wisdom/2    = Wits
Wisdom+Charisma/2       = Empathy

Animals only have Strength and Agility, Strength is based on HD (see below)
Humanoids have all stats, ignore HP
Monsters Strength is based on HD (see below), they may have all stats if intelligent

For non-humanoids calculate Strength as follows, using size and constitution modifier:

5E Size     Hit Dice   Conversion
Tiny               D4    = HDx.25 ‘. +constitution modifier
Small             D6     = HDx.5 ‘.   +constitution modifier
Medium         D8     = HDx1 ‘.   +constitution modifier
Large            D10   = HDx1.25 ‘. +constitution modifier
Huge             D12   = HDx1.5     +constitution modifier
Gargantuan   D20   = HDx2  +constitution modifier

Skills:
Skill ranks are based on proficiency level -1 (minimum of 1).  Adjust any skills for beasts based on current skill scores compared to proficiency level (especially for skills that won’t have the attribute in Fbl).

Skills Deduct attribute modifier, use highest proficiency for skill minus 1.

5E                                               Fbl
Attribute
Strength         Athletics        ==       Strength.   Might
Dexterity        Acrobatics        ==    Agility       Move
Dexterity        Sleight of Hand    ==Agility      Sleight of Hand
Dexterity        Stealth                == Agility       Stealth
Intelligence     Arcana                ==Wits          Lore
Intelligence     History                ==Wits          Lore
Intelligence      Investigation      ==Wits         Scouting
Intelligence.     Nature                ==Wits         Survival
Intelligence      Religion             ==Wits          Lore
Wisdom         Animal Handling    =Empathy   Animal Handling
Wisdom           Insight               ==Wits           Insight
Wisdom           Medicine           ==Empathy    Healing
Wisdom           Perception         ==Wits          Scouting
Wisdom           Survival             ==Wits          Survival
Charisma Deception                ==Empathy    Manipulation
Charisma         Intimidation     ==Empathy     Manipulation
Charisma         Performance   ==Empathy     Performance
Charisma         Persuasion     ==Empathy      Manipulation

Constitution /5                     ==Strength          Endurance

It can be assumed that for each weapon an NPC has that they have the relevant proficiency, these translate into ranks in Melee or Marksmanship.
Proficiency                      ==Agility Marksmanship
Proficiency                      ==Strength Melee

Armour Class
AC-Dex Modifier (if any) -10 = Armour Rating.  Some natural armour doesn’t include Dex bonus. Medium Armour Dex Bonus = 2 Max, Heavy Armour = No Dex Bonus.

Attacks:
For humanoids use 5E attack bonus - Strength Modifier as Melee or - Dexterity Modifier as Marksmanship for ranged attacks.

For monsters use individual attacks, subtract 5E Strength bonus from attack bonus, convert 5E Strength score to Fbl stat and add to remaining number. Reduce by 1 for 2 targets, reduce by 2 for all targets in range band.  Do not reduce the attack bonus if the creature has Multi-attack (see below).

If the creature has multi-attack then each attack listed targets the relevant number of characters, or a single character multiple times.  Increase the attack bonus by the number of attacks listed under multi-attack if you list a monster attack that targets only one character.

Damage is based on the average damage in 5E, 1 to 20 is 1 damage, 21 to 50 is 2 damage, 51+ is 3 damage.

Fear attacks, such as roar, use half Wisdom save as Base Dice

Poison and disease use listed save -10 for potency

For other special attacks check this document for corresponding rules (adapted from monster creation guidelines in Legends and Adventurers booklet) -

Movement:
5E Movement/30= Fbl Movement rate

This is a great start. I would like to see this develop more.

I am interested in your sentence "Reduce by 1 for 2 targets, reduce by 2 for all targets in range band", which seems to imply you would allow setting up a creature that makes 2 attacks as one Slow Action. I think this is an important addition to the game. I am finding in my FBL game, now that the PCs have a fair bit of XP accumulated, that they are able to very quickly crush any opponents. So having creatures that "break the rules" becomes more important in making an exciting encounter.

Thanks.

This doesn’t break the rules as many creatures have unique attacks that allow them to attack multiple targets already, most sweeping attacks allow them to do this.

after doing some conversions I have adjusted the conversion rate for HD to Strength as creatures were coming out a lot tougher than a Dragon.

I have changed it to -
Huge           D12 == HDx2.5 ‘+constitution modifier
Gargantuan D20 == HDx3 ‘+constitution modifier

Just wanted to say thanks for nailing down a monster conversion method Lupex.  I would would give some actual feedback, but sadly I'm still trying to work up to my first FL game.  Cheers

Thanks, this speeds up conversions greatly and the results look promising so far. I hope you get a game started soon.

I still wasn’t happy with the HD conversions, so I have reduced the higher multipliers to -

5E Size     Hit Dice   Conversion
Tiny               D4    = HDx.25 ‘. +constitution modifier
Small             D6     = HDx.5 ‘. +constitution modifier
Medium         D8     = HDx1 ‘. +constitution modifier
Large            D10   = HDx1.5 ‘. +constitution modifier
Huge             D12   = HDx2. +constitution modifier
Gargantuan   D20   = HDx2.5 +constitution modifier

I think this will give more consistency with the conversion Strength compared to Fbl Monsters, although I do think Fbl monsters are now becoming quite easy for the group to defeat.

I have lowered Strength multiplier again for D10, D12 and D20.

I have had details of multi-attack, which increases base attack against individual targets.

I have changed the attack damage to relate to the average damage in 5E.

Ah, I'm not sure it works for 3.5 as 5E is actually quite different mechanically
