Parchments and non casters

Sat 02 Mar 2019, 11:10

Hello!

I figured out something...
With a written form of the spell (parchment or book), its rank is considered as 1 rank lower.
Then a rank 1 spell falls to 0.

In order to cast a spell, your rank in the path needs to be higher or equal.
Then if your rank is 0 (non spellcaster, or spellcaster of other path/tradition), you match!

To conclude, non-casters can cast rank 1 spells if written.

If you go further, if written, they can cast rank 2 spells with an automatic Mishap.

Interesting no? :-)

It grants the Spellcasters to start some trade of magic!

The magic chapter clearly says that you need a master to teach you a new talent so that you can cast spells from another Discipline, the assumption being that Sorcerers and Druids have already been taught one Discipline already.

I would never allow this suggestion at my table and would have a stern word with any player who wanted to try and rules-lawyer such a thing.

I would be tempted to allow this, on the basis that any parchment would be prepared by either another PC or by he GM as something to be found in he setting.

The ramifications of the rank 2 being reduced to rank 1 but the caster needs to chance cast, and the automatic mishap is a good balancer for this sort of thing.

I would love a non-magic user to pick up a scroll with an inscribed spell, roll for mishap and then be pulled into the veil, that would be awesome.

I like it! If I run a campaign in Ravland in the future I think I would consider implementing this. I think more accessible, but dangerous magic fits the setting pretty well.

The FL Players Handbook, p 116 (first page of Magic chapter), states "Every discipline is linked to a specific talent (see Chapter 4), that is a prerequisite to be able to cast spells within each discipline."

As Matt indicated, regardless of rank, you require a talent.

The parchment for Talent 0 characters seems to me to be against the rules as written and the spirit of the rules.

If you want your players to have this capability, though, just make a house rule.
