How do you learn magic on your own?

Fri 26 Jan 2018, 22:38

In order to learn spells or increase your magic level (aptitude) you spend XP and “You must also find a master who has a higher level than you in the magic talent and who is ready to share his secrets with you.”

This isn’t really a rules question, but a more general question about the world/setting...
How can you learn magic on your own?
How did the first spell caster come about?

Isn't this a question in all fantasy games. Another question would be on the same theme is, how can you learn the highest level of magic?

It could be that some people have learned magic through years and years of study and mediation. Perhaps not so practical for PC, but could be a viable way. Let the mage player meditate by himself in his own research and that would be the equivalent to having a master (perhaps not years and years).

There’re lots of games that allow players to design their own spells, learn a new spell from any spell book on their own, and to progress in their magical aptitude by simply “leveling up”.

However, those games are typically in high-fantasy settings, where spell casting is common and people are born with the ability to wield magic.

Requiring a welling master to improve your magic works great in a low-fantasy setting, where spell castings is rare and secretive. Spell casters have a more fantastical background story and likely indebted to a powerful master/cult or some demonic entity.
I like the inherent limiting factor to becoming a spell caster and improving in it.

The reason I ask is because the ability to independently become a more powerful spell caster is a great adventure plot in a low-fantasy setting.
I just want to know if this is already in the mythos of the Forbidden Lands.

It's possible yes, but much harder. Perhaps we should add something about this in the rules. :)

I really liked the Ghostmaster Ritual in ED. You perform a ritual and summon the ghost of a very experienced- in this case - spellcaster who teaches you. That is a very powerful ritual and I can see that you have to play through some adventures to get such a ritual.

IIRC the creation myth says elves and dwarfs were the first spell casters and that they spread the ability to other kin over time. You can take this to mean that the first casters were divine creations of sorts. That could mean that the original elven caster is still around somewhere and that there is indeed no way to learn on your own. Not sure I like this interpretation myself though.

There is also the question of how did the character learn magic in the first place?

I would strongly assume that he have learned his craft with a master. In RAW you have someone to teach you when you whish to learn new magic so I suppose it have to be the same at the beginning. Perhaps some player has a good idea for a background in which he has learned magic spontaneously and if it’s a good story so this is what has happened.

Some guidance from this in the rules would be helpful, and help to set the scene for magic using characters.

Yes please.  :D
Also, will there be scrolls or grimoires that magic users could find that contain new spells or spells of a higher level that the caster could then learn/use?
