Re: Converting OSR monsters to Forbidden lands system

Hey Lupex, just wondering if you could look at my attempt to convert a black pudding. The OSR stats are listed on the left and forbidden lands format on the right. It seems a bit strong to me at first glance, I'm considering making the gear degradation only a chance thing but black puddings should theoretically always degrade stuff.

I would be happy to have a look but unfortunately it won't be until tomorrow as I am travelling today.

Apologies for the delay but life has been keeping me busy lately.

I have had a look at your conversion and also done some research on Black Puddings as I wasn’t aware of them previously. But they are in the top 10 most dangerous creatures in old dnd.

Can you confirm what edition stats you are using for them, as I have found some slightly different AD&D stats that give slightly different results.

This is what I have
Black Pudding
Armour Class :6. Agility: 4 (10-6) No armour
Hit Dice: 10. Strength: 30 (10x3)
THAC0: 11. Base Attack: 9 (20-11, as lower THAC0 is better, plus extra for weapon damage)
Attack Damage: 3D8. I would use this to increase base attack by 4 (8/2), to 13, and have attack damage be 3 (apparently it is one of the highest damage dice?) Use the acid damage where it continues to do 1 point of damage for d3 rounds.

Attacks - I think the attacks you have done work, but I might add a swallow attack where the Black Pudding attempts to devour an adventurer. It’s not hard to escape as they can just cut through but does cause extra damage per round and further degrades gear.

Any attack by the black pudding first reduces any armour bonus by the damage caused before inflicting damage on the target. ( apparently it could dissolve chain mail in 1 round and plate in 2 rounds).

Special - Any successful hit against the Black Pudding degrades weapon by 1 gear dice (this cannot be repaired).

Any successful attack against a black pudding will split the pudding into two equal size black puddings (device the remaining strength).

The black pudding can only be injured by fire or heat.

Move: 60’. Move: 3

That’s all I’ve got, hopefully that helps?

Wow great stuff, I was using a general OSR monster reference document, not from any particular system. I also opted for the HD+2 strength calculation as 30 seemed way too much to me, then again I didn't really realise how dangerous these were meant to be. I also shied away from the 3 move because it seems a slimy thing wouldn't move as fast as a lot of the 2 move monsters in the Gm's handbook. Great to see your take though I really appreciate the feedback.

Yeah, the Black Pudding is super dangerous, I would expect player death if they face it head on. It can also eat though wooden doors and stone, so the adventurers can run and barricade doors behind them but it will only delay the inevitable.

I need to have a think about movement rates, so far it seems to be using a formula of devising by 20 (round up), but this might not be workable. I will have a think.

Yeh I thought about the dividing by 20 aswell but it seems a lot of OSR monsters have 30', 60', 90' or 120'. Maybe dividing by 30 is better?

I think you might be right. The maximum movement in Forbidden Lands seems to be 3, and this is limited to large flying monsters, such as Dragons. I would say to round up though.

Has anyone else tried some conversions, using my suggestions or your own conversion formulas?

How do they look?  What works, what doesn't etc.  What monsters have you successfully converted?
