aquiring talents and Wits roll

Sun 18 Aug 2019, 02:36

Hey guys on page 40 on the section on spending experience points it says a new talent can be purchased without a teacher but the player must make a wits roll.
2 questions:
  • Can this wits roll be pushed?
  • if the roll fails does the player lose the XP?

Can this wits roll be pushed?
Ah, this is a good question. I personally don't allow it, it feels like a cheap way of getting WP, but that's me.

If the roll fails does the player lose the XP?
No, you only pay xp if you actually get the talent.

I really don't see why you couldn't push the wits roll. It's a pretty important roll after all and the only way for low-wits characters to reliably learn new talents.

Except for have someone training you. Which is another reason I won't allow pushing the wits roll, I like the trainer option to be worth it.

They’ll succeed eventually. They are low wits after all, they’re a little slow. And yeah, get a trainer if they’re worried about it.

I wouldn't allow pushing the roll for a few reasons. First the roll isn't a skill roll, just a wits roll so this isn't a skill test. Second the training isn't a about the stress of learning it is about how long does it take to learn. There is nothing lost except time for failing, the Experience points aren't lost. I also think that the push mechanic in this case would be just to gain WP on the cheap.

The rulebook states you can push a skill check, this is not a skill check :) also, the players will "level up" pretty fast anyway so they don't need to push it.

Just wanted to confirm, upgrading (as opposed to acquiring) a talent doesn't require a Wits roll, am I right?

Right, rank one require a Wits roll (or training) and some sleep. Rank two and three require some sleep only.

And as a bonus clarification: Skill level one require a skill use (or training) and some sleep. Skill level two to five require some sleep only.

Besides enough xp.
