Seeds - little snippets to inspire

Mon 09 Jan 2017, 14:55

The idea here is to post some little things that might inspire a short adventure. Maybe filler, maybe foreshadowing a bigger event.

This one is about spider silk that has antibiotic qualities.

http://www.sciencealert.com/researchers ... eal-wounds

So, what if a Loop scientist had created spiders that would effectively work like maggots. They wander around the body, munching on dead or diseases tissue and when they find a wound they wrap it up in healing bandages.

The first we see is finding an entire body wrapped up. We don't know that this person suffered serious injuries and the spiders are following their programming.

How would you feel about spiders running up your arm after finding an entire body wrapped in silk?

This one is all about the Loop scientist who invented a miracle plant growth formula. Of course, it wasn't meant to get into the wild but that was kinda helped by an accident in the Magnetrine Motorcycle Lab next door.

Death can and should be used in game. Look at "Stand By Me" and "Stranger Things", I just don't think it should be used against the player characters (others disagree).

Death and Loss are powerful motivators. Imagine a short scenario where an older sibling dies in a electrical-magnetrine accident. The Kids are distraught, especially the one whose younger sibling is in the group. But they find that the older kid lives on, in a somewhat symbiotic-electro-ghost. The scenario becomes investigating the limits of the ghost (is it a ghost? is it a recording? Can it really think up new stuff? Is it related to the Loop AI research  -  the brain pattern of the sibling implanted on a chip).

Resolutions can include adopting it as a connection or anchor. Or maybe trying to save it from losing power connections because once it's Tether (to steal a term from Wraith) is disconnected, it will dissipate. Can it become motile if within a certain field of highly ionised particles? I'm thinking of the hologram doctor from Voyager now.

I really love this idea!
Actually, for more on that, watch the Netflix Original movie, SPECTRAL. or Dirk Gently Holistic Detective Agency. Also on Netflix.

This seed is called "COIN HEIST"

Image

The kids are going to the local video games arcade as usual and wasting their pocket money (something I can say as an adult but, hey, I did it too). They notice a guy in the arcade they've not seen before. He holds a strange wooden box with two lights and a switch up to the side of one of the slots and then leaves, sniggering to himself. Honest kids will report this activity but there doesn't seem to be anything wrong and Miko, the arcade maintenance guy, berates them for wasting his time.

Time passes. Play another scenario.

Mike calls them over and asks them if they have seen that guy again. Turns out there's something wrong with a load of the machines, takings are way down. Miko tells them that if this keeps up, the arcade will be forced to close. The kids now have a mystery and one with the heart of their childhood at risk!

What's happening is that the guy, an impoverished quantum scientist at The Loop, has invented a spatial vortex machine. When held up against a certain model of slot machine and activated, it will steal all of the coins of a certain size or shape that enter it and teleport them to who knows where. The guy, Halle Sikorsk, has high debts but isn't entirely stupid. He didn't want to steal all of the coins, just the cupronickel-clad nickel 5 kronor coins. Silver and cupronickel-clad copper coins were not affected.

They may spot him in town but most obviously because while he's insanely smart, he's also insanely dumb. Rather than pay off his debts, he's bought a brand new 1984 Porsche 944. They may also track him down by asking at banks if people have been depositing large numbers of coins. He's living in a 3 bedroom house and in one of the rooms is a box attached to the ceiling, out of the bottom of the box fall 5 kronor coins in a constant stream, into a complex series of chutes. There are coins everywhere, overflowing out of barrels and bags. It's a kings ransom. The machine is fragile and the effect wears off and has to be renewed. Halle needs to go to jail. He could be trapped by putting marked coins into the machines and then getting the police to search. That's a difficulty in itself.

Nice!
I like this "They may spot him in town but most obviously because while he's insanely smart, he's also insanely dumb. Rather than pay off his debts, he's bought a brand new 1984 Porsche 944."

"Somewhere.....beyond the sea"

(This is inspired by the real world grounding of the Soviet Submarine S-363  which hit shore near Karlskrona, a few hundred miles south of the Loop.)

During the most recent test of the loops, a frequency was emitted which if it had been 2016, would have completely wiped out all land and sea baed GPS units. Luckily, it's the early 1980s and no-one but the Military has access to the satellites (GPS came on board in 1978). It's known that the Russians GLONASS system was horrendously incomplete and also known that they would piggyback off GPS and Galileo signals for positioning. This frequency, combined with an inexperienced navigation officer, meant that the submarine struck a rock off the coast of the Loop and is currently sitting below the surface. The scientific team on board are content to measure signals from the Loop but the Political Officer on board is keen to not be trapped. Their radios and other gear are inoperational. To this end, they have started sending junior officers ashore. These men, who only speak Russian, stumble ashore after swimming through a torpedo tube and refused to speak to anyone (a la Caspar Hauser) and are presumed to be spies and two have been captured by Loop security personnel. A third, however, has evaded the Loop and made his way to a local village where he has stolen clothes and food. He is now camped up in a rusty magnetrine hulk and trying to get the actuators on line and serviceable. He then plans to use the hulk to float over to the sub, attach ropes and drag it off the rocks.

In three days the Swedish military will arrive, the Russians having had to admit they had a "lost" submarine. There will be some detente around it and the additional emergency of the supplies on board the submarine being low, everyone is keen to resolve this quickly.

The time is ticking for our young Russian engineering officer and also for the men on the sub. Imagine how some inquisitive kids will ruin his plans...

May 5th, 1984.  The Herreys' song Diggi-Loo Diggi-Ley wins the Eurovision Song Contest for Sweden

The song itself deals with the lead singer discovering a pair of golden shoes in the street one day. He puts them on and immediately feels like dancing in the street, entering a "magical world". Thus, he wishes for everyone to have a pair. The English translation, released some time after the Contest, took much the same theme, titling the song "Golden Shoes".

Now, what if this was based on a real experience?

I think that Swedish Ceremonies could be useful for other Mysteries.

I am going to look in tourism books for Summer Ceremonies.

Maybe some fishing contests, national ceremonies (and their meaning), musical festivities, ...

Here are some clues :
