Attribute TNs

Sun 23 Jan 2022, 14:42

I am just delving into the starter set a bit more and I can't figure out why the hobbits seem to have a +2 bonus to all their ability TNs. For example Drogo has a strength of 3 but a TN of 15 rather than 17. I expect I am missing something obvious.

Well spotted!

- p19 of the Core Rulebook offers an option to use 18-attribute rather than 20-attribute for shorter campaigns/one-shots. The starter set understandably takes that part but they need to update the starter set's text to note that as discussed in the FAQ/errata thread linked above.

Hope this helps.

I had the same issue. Could not figure it out and then ended up asking. In general though, I wish it was clearer through the rules how TN is calculated. The only spot is the one page, not even on the pages that describe the character sheet.

The information on how TNs are calculated is repeated on p28 and p29 as part of character creation, alongside the section on p18. Appreciate some people may miss this, but I think they’re striking a decent balance already between repetition for clarity/ease and wasting space/constantly repeating the same point. But understand tastes vary.

Only on page 18 does it say anything about starting a TN at 18 instead of 20. On page 28 and 29 it does say to start with 20, thanks for pointing that out. Part of the problem is that a lot of new people bought the KS for the first time. So all these new rules are quite different than other RPGs. What would have been nice is a one page quick start guide to walk new people through the setup. Something like this (that I got from another player): https://www.dropbox.com/s/7r2cg6r0x09ko ... t.pdf?dl=0

So trying to piece together the starting characters and reading the rules as written - it was not clear at all why they all started with lower scores.

I think the information is all there, and clearly organised, you just have to be patient and read the rules. It's not a particularly different or strange RPG. It's not D&D, if that's your only experience, but it's not a very different style of game, nor a very complex.

If you've gotten to p18 and it's not clear, don't worry, just keep reading. The best way to understand a system is to make a character, and the instructions on p28 are very clear. You just have to take the time to read things, and not expect to understand everything from the start.

That sheet was made by a user of this Discord, where you can ask lots of questions of experienced players, and see more play aids:
