Hello!
Please use this thread to report any typos or errors in Chapter 4 - Characteristics in the Alpha PDF of The One Ring core rulebook. Guidelines to remember:
  • Before reporting an error, please check and see if it already has been reported, and if so, don't report it again.
  • If you want to discuss or feedback something that is not a clear error, don't do it here - instead, please start a new forum post the specific issue.
  • Please report your feedback no later than July 20. After this date, we are unlikely to be able to make any further changes.
Thank you!

"Scan" seems a strange name for a skill, a bit out of place with the setting. Could a better word be found. "Search" perhaps?

Page 72: Standard of Living: the Starting treasure rating (-30) is missing below the "POOR" paragraph. However, the value is correctly reported in summary table at the end of the section.

The info box on page 67 is split between the columns and separated by the sidebar. The format of the box makes it appear as two separate info boxes. Seems like a format error.

I agree with this assessment. Why the change from using Search? Even the quote associated with the skill uses the word "search." Scan sounds a little too high tech. I think the difference between Search and Awareness is clear enough, with Search being proactive and Awareness being passive. The only thing Scan implies, as opposed to Search, is that Scan seems like it would be a quick action and Search might take longer. This one has me curious as to the logic behind the change.

Scan is an awful name for a language loving RPG as TOR. Please change it. Search as jamesrbrown wrote is soooo much better. Thanks in advance.

I have to agree, Scan is pretty awful. Search or something similar will do fine.

I also find Enhearten a mouth-full but I guess I can get used to it.

Chapter 4 Characteristics

Page 64 column 1
4th and 5th lines are a quote and should probably be in red italics rather than black text

I think Brawling should probably be a combat proficiency in its own right, to allow for characters to focus more on unarmed and dagger attacks, without needing to be specialists in more martial weapons.

And I'm in agreement on Scan. It doesn't seem a very Tolkien-ish term.

Scan is in the book, and it fits the use of the skill perfectly:
Aragorn walked behind him, grim and silent, stooping now and again to scan some print or mark upon the ground.
'Search' is also in the book of course, but the 'scale' of the usage is inconsistent and often it's used in cases that would be Explore in TOR rules. The name change makes it clear that Scan is for close inspection and Explore for wide areas.
