Polish Pronunciation

Fri 19 Nov 2021, 11:03

I only learned today that Łódź is pronounced something like Wusch (not even sure how to write how it sounds). It would be really handy for players and referees if there was a pronunciation guide for the Polish place names.

The Ł is more like a W sound, so I believe it's pronounced more like "Wōdge" or "Woodge." I saw a bit of an early streamed game where they kept pronouncing it "Todd's" and it confused the hell out of me for quite a while.

Polish is unfortunately not a super easy language!

The concept will be similar to the Pointee-Talkee Guide that my Grandfather brought back from World War 2, when he was in Burma. It had translations From English to Burmese, Thai, Vientnamese (Then called Annam) and Simple Chinese.

The intention here is to have English, German, Russian, and Polish, with the Actual Translation to be read, and the Phonetic Spelling for English Natives. A few hundred phrases.

so:
Eng: Do you have any food?

Polish: Czy masz jedzenie?
(Je mash yedzenya?)

Russian: У вас есть еда?
(Oo vas yest' yeda)

German: Hast du etwas zu essen?

I used to use the actual Russian and Polish phrases, and players really enjoyed it.

English: Talk, or I'll put a bullet in your head.
Russian: Говори или я пулю тебе в голову.
(Govori ili ya pulyu tebe v golovu.)

Players went out and bought phrase books, it was cool.

I use Google translate and listen really carefully how they pronounce the sentence and then I write it down how I hear it. Neither me nor my players speak russian or polish, but at least it sounds like it

Not an arrow to the knee? I'm disappointed ;)

Eng: Do you have any food?

German: Hast du etwas zu essen?
Good example of how Google Translate and time passed will get you into trouble, or at least "might".

It should rather say: "Haben Sie etwas zu essen?"

While the translation is literally (as in "literally" not as in "metaphorically") correct, it would be considered impolite. German is more formal between people, who don't know each other and that would be certainly true 21 years ago. Saying "du" instead of "Sie" would be fine today, between youngsters... probably. But asking for a favor in 2000, you'd better be nice about it, and that politeness requires "Sie" as a pronoun and a different conjugation of the verb "haben" ("to have").
