Nah, they're about 2kg really. At least the Scepter ones I have are.

To be clear, I'm talking about "Fuel Can, Plastic, 5-Gallon, Tan, NSN 7240-01-337-5268" and the like. 10 lbs. Standard replacement to "CAN, GAS, MILITARY, STEEL, 5 GAL, NSN 7240-00-222-3088." 11.5 lbs. Either has enough heft and rigidity to beat someone to death with (or at least into submission) and still be functional for their intended purpose; DAM 2, CRIT 4, Armor +2, -1 to hit ;)

(Sorry. Army made me not care for my first 12 years as a scout and cavalry officer, I had purpose built racks for the 2 or 3 I carried, and the next 12 keeping in the back of my mind how many I could squeeze in with a given load of ammo if my 978s got schwacked.)

Yeah, that's what I'm talking about too. It is not 10 lbs empty, I guarantee it. If I had a scale handy I'd empty out one of the ones I have to prove it. But Scepter says 4.33 lbs for the water can.

Maybe Scepter's done approved or unapproved product improvement. My cataloging and planning data says 10. I wouldn't notice the difference in practice; I'd maybe note it as "around one rifle".

I'm not really a fan of pass/fail skill rolls just to do the thing. I'll make it some sort of choice with consequences, I think. Stamina roll (with modifier for how over-encumbered you are), take damage on a failure. Something like that.
Fail forward is a core rules element. The GM can offer success with complication or with damage on a failed roll.

It is mentioned briefly, mostly in passing, but it's not supported all that well by the actual rules -- or at least not clearly so in a way that suggests how to go about it. This is probably why I have come to mostly prefer systems with clear trinary outcomes. But yes, you're right, it's often the case that you should just hand out consequences on failure ("Yes, but...") rather than simply saying yes or no. I have been using Tension Dice and clocks for these sorts of things, which works well for many situations.
