Initiative

Thu 11 Feb 2021, 22:25

I'm curious what people have been doing in their games for the "initiative roll." I know the book suggests using a deck of cards and have every character draw one but when playing online, this becomes just another job for the GM to do or you have to track down an app for card dealing. Give me some good house rules!

Depending on your online system, card support is included. Decks are present in Roll20. I use the Sidekick bot for Discord dice rolling and it has a deck, too.

Foundry just randomly rolls 1-10 results, using some method. This results in a unique turn order. Given that other than the order isn't actually very important usually, it works fine. I would prefer an initiative system that actually reflected... initiative. But really any random method works as well as any other.

Initiative is 1 - 10 so ... 1D10, discard duplicate results.

How would this work. Player A rolls a d10 and scores an 8. Then Player B gets a 6 and Player C gets an 8. Does C re-roll until they don't get a 6 or 8? And then the next entity rolls?

If you would deal cards, you have to deal the cards one at the time, meaning that Player B can't get an 8 because Player A already got that card and Player C can't get card 6 or 8. The same can be done with dice. Player B have to re-roll if he happens to roll an 8 just because Player A already got that and Player C have to re-roll his dice if he get a 6 or an 8.

Exactly, player C has to re-roll until they get a result that hasn't been rolled yet.

Thanks for all the advice. I think just rolling a d10 one at a time will be more cumbersome than just taking away drawing cards. I'll give it a shot though. Perhaps, I just have an issue with initiative in Twilight compared to other table top rpgs!

It literally does not matter. It's a number progression in order. It honestly doesn't even need to be unique, if you have a tie-breaking method. Roll 1d100 to get less possibility of duplicates. Pick an app and roll 1d592323.

I Use Foundry and have modded it to roll D6 for initiative and then I as GM can modify it according to their weapon initiative modifyer. I am hoping this will be easier in future updates, but it works for now.

I think the needed mods are : "Quick combat" and "Combat initiative modifyer"
