New dice system!

Fri 04 Sep 2020, 16:45

Hello all! I'm new here, but I've been running the numbers on the new dice for Twilight 2000 and I thought I would come and share in case anyone was curious.

Basically, rolling a d8 which succeeds on an 6+ is roughly equivalent to rolling three d6 which pass on 6+.
Rolling a d10 which gives 1 success on a 6+ and 2 on a 10+ is roughly equivalent to rolling four d6.
Rolling a d12 which gives 1 success on a 6+ and 2 on a 10+ is roughly equivalent to rolling five d6.

Hthat gives you some idea of what to expect with the new dice pools.

So it means that in T2000 you will be able to use a similar system without needing to handle so many dice. It will also let you add in the ammo dice without the numbers of dice getting silly.

Nice work... thanks for sharing.
Rolling polyhedral dice is also more nostalgic ;)

I still prefer the MYZ d6-system.

I coded the dice in combination with the skills.

I've done the math in part myself, came up with similar conclusions. Nice to feel validated.

Hmm... so... does this mean there's a significant jump in probability from D6 to D8?

I mean, rolling a D8 is like rolling 3 D6... and then it increases by one for each dice increase... but there is no equivalent of rolling 2 D6...

Seems that way, since every result of 6 or higher is a success. So a D8 has 3/8 chance of success, exactly the same as 3D6 -- except that 3D6 could theoretically net you more than one success, while a D8 can't. I don't think I ever saw any dice result modifiers used, but 1D8-1 would be the same as 2D6 with the same stipulation.

I do not think so. Rolling a D8 and multiple D6 does not give a linear comparison. Rolling 3 ones on 3d6 has the same chance of rolling 3 sixes (1/216). Rolling 6 or more on a D8 as higher chances (37.5%) than on getting a single 6 on 3d6 (34.7%). The spread increases with more D6 on one side and increase on die size on the other.

Said that, to get more successe on a d8, 6 is one, 7 is 2, 8 is three. Not rocket engineering involved.

I always maintained that either D10, if you are fine with 10% increments, or percentile dice, if you want more granularity, are the way to go. Never been a fan of BoD system.

Okay, you're right. The chances are not EXACTLY the same. In fact, the chance of a success on 3d6 is actually 42%, a solid 5% better than on a D8.

Anyway, I tend to disagree on dice in general, but that's preference. D6 and D10 don't give enough granularity as % based systems, and I haven't enjoyed a D100 based system (or had to!) since the 90s. Most people at the tabletop seem to enjoy playing with dice and the tactile advantages of them are concrete. Rolling 4d6 simply feels better and more powerful than rolling 1D6. Like anything else, it can be easily taken too far.

well... BoD systems at times are out of control. Once I had to roll 43 D6 to resolve a combat. Awful. and my wrist complained. Also despite scientific probabilities BoD system never cooperates. In my designs I prefer either D10 or 2D6 (sum) with CRT. D10 is quite granular if used correctly, but percentile throws are better in RPG-lie situation.

weird my math tells me 34.7 to get at least a single 6 on 3D6... and still it is based on the averaging approach, my dice never work so neatly. But the more dice you roll the less control you have on the outcome as a designer.
