How long is a turn?

Sun 18 Oct 2020, 14:15

Vaesen mentions turns on a few occasions as a measure of time, but I can’t find anywhere it actually mentions how long a ‘turn’ is in this setting. Which is slightly frustrating as apparently it takes a turn to treat injuries. In other systems a turn ranges from 10 to 15 minutes, so how long in Vaesen?

Turns is a combat measurement. In each combat round each participant may take a turn based on their initiative, so it is seconds not minutes.

In Pathfinder (and Dnd I guess), a turn is 6 seconds which seems more reasonable (if you have a short and long action, ie walk and hit) but I guess it just mean that the actions/skills etc that include "round" are short enough to be used in combat

That seems strange as in most other YZE games a turn is a much longer period of time than a round, also there are some effects from Vaesen abilities that happen every turn. I wonder why they didn’t just say every round, like they usually would?

That's probably a D&D holdover... in D&D BX/BECMI a round is 6 seconds a turn 10 minutes. AD&D it was round of 1 min, turn of 10 minutes.

Note that T2K 2.x used a 5 second turn, with initiative (a score from 1-7 for PCs) determining actions per turn, round being relegated to ammunition.

The various other YZE games are fairly loose with the time per combat round and per exploration turn.

One might think that's natural, but other games (like FFG's Star Wars) have turns that are literal minutes...

I may be mistaken, but I am pretty sure it's only Alien who has both rounds and turn.

I certainly think Vaesen could have been a little more consistent with the terminology (as they used both rounds and turn), but I guess one round consists of x number of turns, a turn being each PC getting to act with one fast and slow action. How long you say? Probably about 6-10 seconds. Whatever makes sense for you to perform the actions.

In both Alien and Forbidden Lands a turn is a specific measurement of time, it’s strange that Vaesen doesn’t distinguish a longer time period than a round, but it is what it is.

You really should check before posting...

Alien, page 83: callout box, bottom left,:
Round 5-10 sec combat
Turn 5-10 minutes stealth
shift 5-10 hours recovery

A factor of two isn't "specific"
