Vaesen soundtrack suggestions

Sun 01 Dec 2019, 14:36

Ok, I start. Will try to avoid too well-known scores (like Bram Stoker’s Dracula for instance). Will add other suggestions to first post if ok.
* Highly recommended

‘Period’ Movies:
Brothers Grimm
Sleepy Hollow
Brotherhood of the Wolf (Le Pacte des Loups)
Woman in Black
The VVitch
Van Helsing (parts at least - not the bombastic ones)
Hansel & Gretchen Witchhunters
From Hell
Solomon Kane
Wolfman
Black ’47 (Non Celtic parts of)
The Corpse Bride
Crimson Peak

TV Series:
The Terror
Penny Dreadful
Dracula (BBC)
Carnival Row
The Alienist

Modern movies:
Midsommar
The Ritual
Let the Right One In (Swedish version) – Johan Söderqvist
The Fly – Howard Shore
Hellraiser – Christopher Young
The Descent – David Julyan

Games: - available at Spotify for instance
*Draugen
*Unravel 1 and 2 by Frida Johansson
Fable 1, 2, 3
Order: 1886
Witcher 1,2,3 etc (parts)

Classics:
Sibelius Finlandia
Holst The Planets
(both written slightly later than mid 1800, but omnious, brooding and evocative).

Other sources/standalone records, anime etc:
*Bortbytingen by Frida Johansson
Dracula – Philip Glass & Kronos Quartet
The Manor on Grimm Hill
Macbeth
Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem – Steve Henifin
Nox Arcana "Grimm Tales" etc
Fantasy Soundscapes web page

* highly recommended.

Do you know about Fantasy Soundscapes ? Here's the website.
I'd use their Cthulhu soundscapes and vampire album for a game like that.
I also consider :
Mutiny in the Bounty
Le Pacte des Loups (French version of "Brotherhood of the Wolf" ? Not sure about that)
And of course everything else you named is great too.

Macbeth (2015), the one with Michael Fassbender. The OST, by Jed Kurzel, is very majestic and dreadful, with very eerie, slow and foreboding pieces intertwined with other parts full of crying strings that evoke darkness and madness. A couple of tracks from this awesome soundtrack:

Macbeth (for a "relaxed" part in which the characters recover from the horrors experienced. There is melancholy and fear, but also hope).

The Child (the characters are about to confront the Vaesen, which present themselves near the end).

Turn Hell Hound (for a chase or a fight scene against whatever you have in mind for the poor PCs).

And these are just some highlights. This soundtrack is full of greatness.

Finlandia (Op. 26) "ominous and brooding"...? Sibelius is turning in his grave, he is...

Evocative, granted. Beautiful, most certainly!
(Same for Holst, come to think of it...)

;)

I fear that Corpse Bride is a bit too easy to recognize. I love the OST but wouldn't use it for a game.
Maybe Romero's "Land of the Dead" OST ?
Definitely "Crimson Peak". Gloomy and dark, not very well known to most people. You can listen to it here :

The soundtracks to the Fable-games series should work well.

And maybe The Order: 1886

When I was writing for Vaesen, I would listen to the following soundtracks, that provided a good gothic mood – and some of them with a bit of Nordic flair (as a Swede myself):
The Wolfman – Danny Elfman
Let the Right One In (Swedish version) – Johan Söderqvist
The Fly – Howard Shore
Hellraiser – Christopher Young
Penny Dreadful – Abel Korzeniowski
Dracula – Philip Glass & Kronos Quartet
The Descent – David Julyan
Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem – Steve Henifin

Thanks for sharing, it’s nice to know where the mood comes from.  :)

On another thought: I was considering finding a theme for Gyllencreutz manor or maybe for Uppsala. Did any of you ever tried that? Using the same theme whenever your players enter a specific place?

Edit: hep, a whole Vaesen-fitting soundtrack, ‘Mansion on Grimm Hill’ can be found on Spotify!
