Can I fund a game written with the FL SRD on Kickstarter?

Fri 12 Jun 2020, 16:23

I see that content created with the FL SRD can be sold on DriveThruRPG through the Free League Workshop program, but what about running a Kickstarter to fund a printed book? Also, can content in the FL Workshop be formatted and made available for print-on-demand?

Does anyone have any insight that they can provide me?

May I create a game with the FL YZE SRD and fund a physical print edition of it on Kickstarter? Or, is it implied that use of the FL YZE SRD to create a product means that it can only be sold in the Free League Workshop in DriveThruRPG?

I believe the OGL is there so you can create a product and then do what you want with it, separate from the DTRPG workshop, like many D&D third party products that are allowed because of the OGL.

Hello!

The YZE OGL and the FLW CCP are related, but actually two different things.

Games created using the OGL and it's SRD here, can be sold in any way you like as long as you follow the rules of the OGL itself.

FLW is mainly intended for publishing community created modules for our exisiting, official games - and that can only be done via FLW.

So in short - you're fine to create a game based on the YZE OGL and Kickstart it, also in a printed format. We'd love to see what you come up with! :)

If we develop new games based on YZE are we allowed to use Skill and Talent names from other MYZ products in our games, such as from Coriolis and Forbidden Lands, or do we have to use the SRD equivalents, such as FIGHT instead of MELEE?

I don’t think this is clear in the SRD or OGL?

So, if I wanted to write a book which had essentially the same system as Forbidden Lands (uses same attributes, professions, skills and core talents), but introduced an altogether different setting, so new Kin with additional kin talents, new gods and new history and campaign with map etc.

Would this be published under OGL? If so, am I able to say it requires the original FbL books to play?

Not without prior agreement with Free League, as the OGL forbids mentioning compatibility with other Year Zero products.

Check the comments in the SRD regarding using skill and talent names.

What I would do is produce a product for fantasy rules using YZE, and not directly mention how rules work. Introducing new kin, background, gods and new talents is absolutely in any case.

Lupex, thank you. I've shelved my idea for now due to other writing assignments, but once I have some free time, I may be reaching out to you. I could use a partner, that's for sure. Please feel free to contact me via email: jonhook<at>gmail.com
