jump calculations?

Sat 18 Apr 2020, 13:21

Can anyone shed light on the mechanic for jump calculations? Cannot find any reference to a dice pool in the core rules

Presume Wits + Science with extended successes required

Also with reference to queuing for a jump, it mentions illegality. Is that piggbacking on another vessel?
Do you have to pay a station to use the jump portal? because it is damned expensive!

Thanks all

From my understanding. Based on the Swedish rulebook. It should be found at the very beginning of the rule section that deals with spaceships, pieces about space travel surround the info.

It's a science roll to calculate, it takes 4 hours. Extra successes bring down the time.
It is presumably frowned upon and if the GM decides some stations might try to 'discourage' people from making their own calculations. Perhaps by levying fines, or perhaps by sending fighters? I assume certain systems guard their portals whereas others let people jump however they please.

Jumping along with a freighter seems like it could both be free, cost something or even be illegal. Again, might be up to the GM. Might vary depending on who owns the freighter.

Jumping alone and paying for it is an economic nightmare, which is why the book implies that small traders usually team up to essentially carpool the jump. Bringing down costs at the expense of time. Since ships might fly at different speeds you have to wait for everyone to meet up at the portal, and then further wait for the calculations from the portal station.

Piggybacking is when a ship lurks around a portal, and a second ship pays for the jump coordinates... then the first vehicle slides through the portal to jump alongside the ship who bought the coordinates without paying for it. That's why it's noted that smaller ships tend to do this with Class V freighters and such; bigger ships make it easier to follow closely through the portal.

Every time a ship piggybacks, the portal station loses birr. It's like jumping a turnstile in a subway.
