Nice discussion here! I'd just like to add that the game assumes character ages of 10-15 years. Playing character outside of this range is not impossible, but will require some tweaking.

The age has a direct effect on the game mechanics - your total score in the four attributes of the game (each rated 1-5) will be equal to your age. To compensate, younger PCs get more Luck Points, making them more versatile.

Thanks for the clarification! It certainly helps us envision the way the game could be played.

Yeah, that's perfect, thank you! That makes things very interesting, linking Attributes to age sounds like a wonderful way to make character creation have a bit more weight. I'm even more eager to see the Beta in the coming week, now, I want to read about this.

None of this surprises me but the access to firearms. Really? I'd have guessed there would be a hunting culture in Sweden, since it's even a point of tourism. Growing up in Canada, I was faced with the same deal, finding a weapon for me at 12 was incredibly simple. Though Combat is definitely not the point of this game, as it's stated itself. I would place a lot more stock in there being traps and gadgets, as well as distractions. Like firecrackers or bottle rockets before you get on your bike and bolt.

As for driving, in Sweden there's AM Driver permits you can get at 15, and A1 you can get at 16. So tractor trucks and mopeds, at least on the older non-adult PCs. Even then, breaking the law can be a great part of an adventure.
Well, there are firearms around, but mostly in rural areas (hunting rifles, shotguns). Also, children of police officers, Home Guard soldiers, active officers and officers in the reserve could have access to Mauser m/96 rifles, SMGs or pistols. Sports and recreational shooters weren't (and aren't) that common. Otherwise, there isn't much of a gun culture.
As for driving, an EPA-traktor (tractor truck) or a moped can be available for those who have turned 15 (even if 14 was more common in rural areas). Limited to 30 kph, it wasn't uncommon that they were tweaked to go at speeds of 40-50 kph. Back in the 80's, you didn't need a license for a moped. I'm not sure about what was required for a tractor truck, but you could have two passengers tops.

Yes, thanks for the clarification on the initial ages. In addition to being "lucky" at a younger age, I would also view it (back in the 1980's at least) as younger kids were more invisible to adults, mostly harmless. So if young kids were spotted by security guards, the guards might just try to scare them away as opposed to actively chasing down older kids who might actually have been up to no good.

Also, regarding the driving age issue -- makes me think of the film "Super 8" where the young girl, Alice, surprises the group by pulling up in a car (and admitting that she still doesn't have a license).

That's interesting. I'm not familiar with the firearms laws in Sweden, but in Canada it's kind of a strange bag. We can't have automatic weapons, pistol are under HEAVY lock and key, but we have so many long guns we can rival the united states in guns per capital. Somewhere like Sweden, where things can still be wild, I'd assumed hunting and needing weapons to defend against nature would be pretty common. Though again going back to the setting, The Loop is on the Malar Islands, and Simon's own paintings has a child pointing a pistol at a machine on the side of the road. It sounds like a tragedy waiting to happen, but I do see dumb kids looking for adventure trying - and succeeding- to find weapons. Maybe some that aren't exactly supposed to exist. That glove and backpack, the strange stick on the cover, ect.

The kid with the gun is with 99 % certainty holding a cap gun. And that stick? The orange one? A bamboo stick or PVC pipe with reflector tape, used to mark the sides of the road during winter so the snow plows know where the shoulder is.

The child on the far right is holding a plow pole, yes, but the child on the far left is holding a long stick hooked up to what appears to be a battery or a control device. The third child (Left to right) has what I assume is the glove from artwork on the kickstarter. Then of course the second child has a bike. As for the gun, This is the work that I was talking about. Trying to impress a girl, I don't think that is a cap gun. There's also another, more recent, work with a gun to a teddy bear's head (Though I do not believe it's from the 'Tales From' series) and a much older piece from 2013-14 with a child with an outright spear made from a Plow pole and a sharp object. I'd be lying if I said I didn't also spend my childhood fighting with my friends with those poles.

The gun to the teddy bear's head is from  Things From the Flood. It's a proper gun, "grandfather’s old pocket pistol" according to the story.

Ah thanks! That makes good sense. I've not been able to have Simons books shipped to me, I've been living on an island.
