Mini campaign based on CoC Return to Mt.s of Madness

Fri 15 Oct 2021, 04:25

I'm going to assume you're at least familiar with Call of Cthulhu, The Mountains of Madness, etc. There is a mini-campaign based around a follow-up expedition to The Mountains of Madness called "Beyond the Mountains of Madness".

The idea is to have the PCs as either Colonial Marines, Roughnecks, even Scientist and Corporate types Can easily fit into the campaign (though there is little in the way for that expansion in PCs). The main idea centers a lot on riffing from the wonderful Call of Cthulhu Campaign "Beyond The Mountains of Madness". And if you haven't read Lovecraft's "At The Mountains of Madness", do so. While he did write in the 1920's so little was known about Antarctica, keep that in mind, but itself would translate wonderfully into the Alien Universe if placed on a planet and found.

So anyway, integrating the Elder Things (most certainly under some other name, maybe even Player suggested if it's a good one) into the Alien Universe will be beyond easy. Hell, even down to the whole vibe of the place reeks of similarity between Alien and the Engineer cities in Prometheus and Covenant. The Elder Things' rebellious slave race the Shoggoths also scream of a connection to A0-3959X.91 – 15 or even the Gold Goo. The Elder Things themselves have a history of actually discarding technology in favor of biotech (which was mysteriously lost!).

Roughnecks and Colonists (used as extra labor or to fill in roles) fit well as the labor for the scientists. Colonial Marines work well as physical security for both the site and the scientists themselves. Wey-Yu is obvious as a site supervisor(s) for Corporate PCs, Scientists are beyond easy to incorporate. Even with specialties not related, a keen scientific mind itself can be of use if the expedition is short of specialists. Who knows what characters will bring to the table.

Anyway, as you can see it's quite adaptable to any type of player group easily. With a few changes to the actual original campaign, you can really distort people's views, especially if they are already getting a hang of the Engineers. While I will keep the form of the Elder Things, I do have some changes in mind for the Shoggoths.

My question is this: Does this sound fun? Does this sound fun as a side/mini-campaign for a Colonial Marine PC group during the USS TAMB’ITAM campaign? Especially to make them realize that there are other old things than just the Engineers and their Goo creations. Things of even unknownable thoughts.
