DIY: Alien Creatures

Sun 24 Nov 2019, 14:25

Hi all,

Working on a little adventure and created an alien species which are lovingly named "Brain Crabs" Figured I share it here for all of you. See what you think.
Image
Brain Crabs (Xenomorph 41B11)

This creature is roughly 2 feet wide and long, and is covered by dark thick chitinous shell, weighing roughly 25kgs. Its scuttling form is a total terror as it will skitter and crawl towards its target and jumping onto it. Digging its sharp spiky knife-like legs and fangs into any exposed skin. Its most brutal attack is if it manages to land on its targets head and impale the skull and the soft squishy bits underneath. After the target has been killed, it will feed on the brain by injecting a spider like venom, which dissolves the gray matter into a form of jelly soup which it slurps out at its leisure.

I forgot how alien inspired the head crabs were from Half Life.

Definitely going to borrow these...
but not use the "Xenomorph" label.
These as just natural predators are reasonable. And as brain eaters, are body horror enough.

So, I have another creature which i am going to throw out for you all. Again, let me know what you think... None of these have been tested in a game, but I think they work pretty good.

Image

Alien Millipede. (The Demon Crawler) Normal/Split

Speed 1/2
Health 3/1
Armor 2/1

Mobility 8/6
Observation 8/6

Roughly 2 meters in length, this creature is as mean and fierce as its earth bound cousins. Except that it hunts humans for supper, and has a nasty habit of dividing itself into two separate creatures if wounded! With hundreds of pairs of sharp pointed legs, and dripping venom, enough to make a grown adult sick and wish for the creature to put them out of their misery on the spot, this killing machine is ALWAYS looking for its next meal.

Replicate: When ever damaged, by non fire damage regardless of if there was enough to kill it outright, roll 1d6. On a roll of 4, 5 or 6. Ignore that damage. This damage will instead actually cause the creature to split apart and to form two identical parts, now smaller and faster (use the split stats listed above). They will continue to attack with the same initiative values plus at the new initiative which is now drawn.  While a portion of this creature is split, any damage which would make it broken, will kill it. No more splitting.

Special attacks

1 = Creepy Crawly Attack. 8 dice damage. Damage 1, armor piercing If any damage is rolled the target is considered grappled and must make a panic roll. The creature crawls over your body with its hundreds of sharp little legs. If not broken free on the next round, then the target will be attacked again by this attack.  CC roll vs 8 to break free. (6 if split)

2 = Coiled Death,  10 dice damage, damage 2. But if damage is taken, then the target takes 1 stress, is grappled and will suffer from suffocation as the creature strangles you. You CC roll vs 10 in order to break free and not suffocate. (8 if split)

3 =  Fangs of Death. 6 dice damage, armor piercing, Damage 2. If damage is taken target suffers from a disease, Viral 6 and becomes broken immediately if infected. (Hit points moved to 0) If the damage would have put the target below zero, roll on the critical hit table as normal. Disease is treated as more normal infection after this point.

4 = Eye Ball Gouger. 4 Dice damage, armor piercing, Damage 1, if any damage is rolled target suffers a critical hit of 34, gains 2 stress and must make a panic roll. The creature scurys over the target, and one of its many legs hooks an eyeball as it moves.

5 = Go for the throat. 5 Dice damage, armor piercing, damage 2. If any damage is taken, then target suffers critical hit 61, all other characters in the same zone suffer 1 stress as blood pours between the fingers of the now mortally wounded character.

6 = Really go for the throat!, 5 dice damage, armor piercing, damage 2. If any damage is taken, then target suffers critical hit 62, all other characters in the same zone suffer 1 stress  and tests for panic as blood spurts between the fingers of the now mortally wounded character.

Always interesting to see what other alien wildlife there might be that we think would fit the Alien universe. I considered an idea myself here:
viewtopic.php?f=99&t=5255&start=10#p40244

And to call it out specifically here:
C-Ks

"Common-kinds" or "comp-killers" (usually referred to as simply "C-Ks") are one of the most prevalent alien "bugs" humanity has been plagued with in their various colonizing efforts, known to consume various, largely inorganic compounds used in various electronics and certain synthetically-made drugs grown. First discovered on Thedus, colonists were initially prone to bring them along to new settlements as pets, unaware that the ecosystem of Thedus had been the only thing keeping their population in check until they were already too widespread. About the size of rats, C-Ks vaguely resemble pillbugs that, in the daytime, appear a soft, dull grey and brown that can sometimes be hard to spot, and at night, give off a prismatic variety of bio luminescence. While fairly docile and dumb, most colonies have a difficult time weeding out an infestation on their own due to their asexual reproduction methods and a knack for scattering akin to rats, sometimes requiring military precision to eradicate, though on starships, cats have been known to take care of any C-Ks that might sneak on board. Curiously, part of the reason C-Ks are still willingly smuggled are due to claims that nearby C-Ks promote lucid and often alluring or evocative dreams, though no hard evidence has been connected with such.
The idea is that the above could be an example of what the Marines may have dealt with in other "bug hunts" as implied in Aliens. Apart from considering more or less the 'opposite' of a xenomorph while still remaining in what I feel would be within the 'Alien' universe, I was also somewhat inspired by the zoog in Lovecraft mythos as well as tribbles from Star Trek. With that said, I've yet to consider what their stats might be, particularly since they're not an active threat to humans (but maybe androids!), and I'm wondering if the physical description should be tweaked any to make them more unique.

Deranged Lasalle's ShipCat

A large (15kg) sized genetically engineered cat, modified from the Iberian Lynx,  genetically programmed to be affectionate... Resistant to, but still subject to, NDD, and when they go nutters... (if choosing to roll, it triples all time ranges, so 3 weeks per roll or +1).

Speed 2
Hits: 2
Armor none:
Abilities:
Carrying capacity 1.
Mobility 7
Observation 10
Manipulation 4
Special:
  • Can evade close combat attacks as a free action on mobility once per Initiative. can counterattack for 1 bonus success as if this was a block.
  • When Paranoid, it only shows up for feeding, and won't go into its cryoberth. When in attack mode...
  • Most ships set the doors to open when it's within 20 cm of them and no pressure differential is present, so that it can go vermin hunting. If the crew hasn't thought to turn this off...
  • All the standard close combat bonus success spends are available, as well as "Bite next attack", to determine if it bites, on a 2 or moreroll 1d; if equal or under the total successes, it will bite.
  • It ignores cluttered terrain, but otherwise moves normally.
  • It can be grappled, but it takes a bonus success to adjust the grapple to prevent a reduced attack. while grappled, it can
First Round: it always attempts an ambush; use the same rules as for a PC. The attack is 8d, damage 1, armor doubled, and it's smart enough to disarm with a bonus success. If not spotted, and no one in Engaged, it will attempt to sneak up and pounce.
1: Feed Me!: It runs up to  engaged range to the nearest person, and begs for food. Manipulation to get the point across. If it succeeds, and the person responds by any motion towards the feeding spot or galley, or hands over treats, it's mellow for the next 1d6 rounds, following them and purring loudly, Then roll normally. If fed a full ration, it will purr for a turn, then disappear for 1d6 turns
2: Pet Me!: It runs up to the nearest person (fast), and makes a 4d shove (slow). If it succeeds, it attempts a grapple with 6d to promptly lay upon the chest. If upon the chest, it will happily sit there, purring, as long as it's being pet by that person, and no others are in Engaged range. The victim must roll Stamina at +3 (+0 if a kid) after the turn or take 1 damage from the much reduced breathing. If anyone else approaches, if there's gunfire or yelling, or if the individual attempts to escape or grab it, it does a 5 die, armor-doubled, 1 damage attack, with one free success.
3: Adore me from afar: It enters short range; it will hang out for 1d6 rounds, then depart. If anyone attempts to close to Engaged, it flees if it can, or attacks with 8d, armor doubled. Treats may be tossed; each treat rerolls the duration.
4: Rowr! Fffft!: It attacks the nearest weapon, be it holstered or not, with 8d, damage 0 + disarm, extra successes can be damage to the person and/or grabbing the weapon. If the weapon is light enough, it will carry or drag it off and "bury" it somewhere. If no one is armed, instead pick the tool, or it guards the door. Anyone entering engaged range of the item gets attacked, 8d, 1 damage, armor doubled.
5: Bite and shred: Moves to nearest person, makes one bite 6d, damage 1, armor piercing. If any damage gets through, it makes an opposed Mobility roll: on success, it will also inflict a #61 crit and grapple at the neck, and until ungrappled, it gets a fast action attack of 8d, damage 1, armor doubled, as it rakes the chest or back with all claws.
6: Flee! If prevented, roll 1d: 1-3 find cover in location, 4: Rowr! Fffft!, 5: Bite & Shred, 6: Ankle-biter.
S: Ankle Biter: 6d, 1 damage, armor piercing. If no armor successes and at least 1 damage, also inflicts a special critical: ripped achilles (See below)
Grappled: Fur and fangs! If grappled but not scruffed/blanketed, fast action  5d attacks, +1d per person in engaged, armor doubled, damage 1, if it gets a second success it may either break the grapple, or swap the armor-doubled claws for the armor piercing teeth. If it gets 2, it does both, only with 4+ does it go for extra damage.
Pounce: if successful at sneaking up, a 9d attack, armor piercing, damage 1, may spend a bonus success to inflict a pounce crit.

Pounce crits:
1: Ripped Achilles move becomes slow, requires surgery (1 shift) to fix penalty, bleeds (Death check at +3). 3d6 healing time from surgery.
2: Damaged Achilles: Mobility –2 & can't run, 2d days.
3: Broken Hand (#23)
4: Gouged Eye (#34)
5: Cracked Spine (#56)
6: Ruptured Jugular (#61)

Note: It will typically attack anything vaguely prey-like (including smaller cats, small dogs) while under NDD.
When not under NDD, it uses this table vs anyone who has hurt its owner... or tries to treat its owner while the owner is making death checks...
Lasalle's techs are still trying to perfect the beasties, and they cost $2000 each, neutered.
When not deranged, they should be run like needy children. Note that the chest sitting may be a problem, especially for kids, even when sane.
