Re: TNs for starting character

There are plenty of ways to reward creativity on the part of the players without forcing them to scrounge for dice with stunt-like descriptions of how awesomely they track the Warg, curtsy at court, flip through books of lore, etc. We’re talking about the central mechanic of the game - a Skill test ...

Re: Less Traits to pick from for Starting Characters

^ 100% The personalities are needlessly restrictive considering the wide range of people inhabiting not just Middle-earth generally, but each culture. It’s just plain weird that certain people culturally cannot be clever, brave, merry, or true-hearted. It isn’t really very true to the source materia...

Re: The Problem With Hope

This is kind of why I think it better to say the Hope mechanic “is evocative” of Tolkien’s themes in Lord of the Rings, rather than that “it is” magic / fate / the Will of Eru. I think there are multiple valid interpretations… I do not think it’s just the Stamina bar from Skyrim. Clearly there were ...

Re: TNs for starting character

I believe that The One Ring is not a game for inexperienced players, nor for inexperienced Loremasters, so it may take some time to get a grip on it. I can’t imagine a game designer would think that this is a positive thing to be said about their game. Games should be accessible. And the issue rais...

Re: TNs for starting character

I have a hard time understanding many of the concerns in this thread. Do people really want a game where starting characters succeed all of the time on skills? What’s the point then on adventuring for a time and becoming more powerful? What’s the point in having six levels of skill if 1 or 2 should...

Re: TNs for starting character

We must also take into account the fact that the game must remain challenging (and therefore interesting) even for characters who are moderately skilled or close to excellence. … If the base TNs were all 2 points lower, then of course the game would become more accessible for starting characters, b...

Re: TNs for starting character

Some of the difficulty issues raised are related to or intertwined with the changes to the Hope mechanic. In the big Hope thread I proposed a couple of changes that might improve the mileage for especially starting characters to hit their high TN/low attribute skills.

Re: The Problem With Hope

Some potential redress to the new Hope mechanics I rather like (these are separate, discrete ideas that might be combined but might not): 1. Making Inspiration worth a lot more than 1d6; if it offered +3d6 we might start approaching statistical probability of a great success or better. 2. Make it so...

Re: The Problem With Hope

Personally I see a lot of consistency in the new Hope system, and in how it has been almost seamlessly embroidered with the Inspiration rules, Distinctive Feature usage and the new Shadow mechanics; and I must admit that I struggle to understand the whole "designers must explain their choices&...

Re: Less Traits to pick from for Starting Characters

I agree with your trait choices here - and again I’ll say that I find it a little perplexing how limited they have become. I guess they will figure more prominently now with Inspiration which is great, but I should get rewarded for playing exactly the character I wanted to play, and limiting choices...
