Re: Balance of Distinctive Features and Useful Items

My objection here isn’t just the difficulty though: it’s the process. Traits and Hope and even obtaining bonus circumstantial success dice used to all feel unique and special. Now tasks are deliberately made more difficult apparently for characters to have a challenge over their long arc of progress...

Re: TNs for starting character

Ohh, okay. That makes sense, thanks. There’s been considerable debate about the dice pool math though as things seem to be a little more difficult, on average. Knowing that, it’s harder for me to get excited about this more “active” approach. Here’s another thing I don’t get - one of the big advanta...

Re: Tips for new loremasters?

Say yes to the players a lot. Don’t discourage them unless their idea is truly awful. Enjoy yourself - often if you urge having fun, the players will pick up on your enthusiasm and also have fun. Don’t worry too much or get overwhelmed by the lore aspects - focus instead on the feel of the game. Des...

Re: Less Traits to pick from for Starting Characters

It’s harder but they also start with both a Reward and a Virtue, but it can’t be one of the unique cultural virtues. I’m not really sure I understand why.

Thanks Aramis, this is really good stuff. Especially the math and rules indexing.

Re: TNs for starting character

Mattcapiche that made me really laugh, thank you. I’m sensitive to the idea that “not everyone is good at everything” and that there are trade offs in character creation. But at the table yes, it really does kind of suck to tell someone “if you wanted to be able to sing well you should have invested...

Re: TNs for starting character

How is excitement factor in any way impacted by how the TN is set? Hitting that TN depends on a dice roll either way. I’m honestly not sure I understand what you mean.

Re: TNs for starting character

I don’t know, I think this is highly relative. We’re having this rules discussion completely out of context of a story. A character climbing a fence in a hurry seems infinitely more likely to happen in the course of normal play, and it would call for a roll if appropriately dangerous to that charact...

Re: Balance of Distinctive Features and Useful Items

I think these are totally fair points. My only counterpoint is that things can get bad if the only way to reliably guarantee success is by leaning on the same tropes time after time. Though that may be a problem beyond the scope of the current discussion, I do think players rapidly catch on to winni...

Re: TNs for starting character

I think we can at least all agree that whatever the difficulty of scaling that wall - whether in Mordor or Farmer Maggot’s garden - we can dramatically improve our chances by pulling out our trusty pipe and puffing away on Longbottom Leaf as we make the climb!
