Re: The Battlefield

For certain! But even that interventionism has had clear limits — the US never intervened overtly in Afghanistan, for instance. But even conflicts with no direct Soviet participation — such as Bangladesh, Western Sahara, East Timor, Uganda, Sri Lanka, dozens of coups d'état ... — didn't see any Amer...

Re: The Battlefield

"Barely" is of course a relative term. Marc isn't actively involved in writing the system or the world, no, but he is keeping a close eye on the development, and provides feedback where he finds it necessary. In other words, wait for the PDF before declaring "it has to be X"- because we don't know w...

Re: The Battlefield

It is all but inevitable that the Warsaw Pact should be the initial aggressor. Given the look at what actually happened in the 90's, it could very easily be that WW III starts in the middle east, and only then spreads to Europe. Or even is started by a third party using false flag actions in the Me...

Re: The Battlefield

No more serious than the rest of us, I'm sure. We're all glad this is fiction. As for what would start a war, and who would have the greatest vested interest: It's an inescapable historical fact that Russia, ever since Peter the Great built the country a navy, has existed in a strategic paradox: the...

Re: Infrared

So, basically, a marine with a smart gun can detect hidden enemies with a heat signature, unless they are behind an obstacle that blocks the heat waves. Exactly so! Heat radiation , not waves , if I'm to pick a nit — but yes, exactly so! [tmi] For anyone interested: "heat waves" generally refer to ...

Re: Infrared

In the meanwhile, though ... yes, an infrared vision device — or rather, what this actually is, a thermal vision device — would reveal targets behind obstacles that are to some degree transparent to the appropriate infrared wavelengths; e.g. smoke, fog, shrubbery, some materials like certain types o...

Re: Infrared

There is an upcoming "Colonial Marines" campaign module that may see a PDF release this year, but at any rate, should come no later than Q1.

That one should cover a lot of these kinds of detail that (often due to space constraints) didn't make it into the Core Rulebook.

Re: The Battlefield

Agreed. Not a single one considered the scenario of NATO invading a WARSAW PACT nation. Yeah ... I assume the scenario is that the Warsaw Pact offensive falters for some reason, and NATO's counteroffensive manages to strike deep through the lines and drive a wedge into Poland. WP leadership sees tha...

Re: The Battlefield

The difficulty here is obviously that the kind of war that WWIII was gearing up to be — a major clash of large standing modern armies in Central Europe — has never happened. There hasn’t even been a small-scale conflict that ticks all the boxes of what a typical battlefield of that war would have l...
