Re: Trying to make sense of "Xenomorphs"

Alien was surprising 40 years ago. I was lucky to see it shortly after release even though I was really too young to see it.  Today, people know what to expect from Alien. The characters will be surprised when someone's chest explodes and a slimy monster comes out in a spray of blood. The players wi...

Re: Campaign Mode Examples

I don't have my book in front of me but the first Alien movie can easily be set up with the sandbox rules we have. The GM rolled a random job to transport an ore refinery from Thedus to Earth. They also rolled on the other tables and got a distress call and an encounter with a Xenomorph. They decide...

Re: Trying to make sense of "Xenomorphs"

I'm surprised this discussion is still going on. If we're looking at canon, the alien does take on some traits from its host and does actually bring some genetics over from its host. So in a very literaly sense the alien in the first movie could be called Kane's Son though I'm not sure the Alien eve...

Re: Campaign Mode Examples

No, it really doesn't matter who's behind it, per se. If one randomizes heavily, in the old-school sandbox way, sooner or later your players will decide who their real enemy is.  It can be left in quantum uncertainty until that point, and then, the GM can either embrace, or negate with counter evid...

Re: Alien films

The only CG in the theatrical edition is the cracks on the Alien's head at the end, and the debris flying past the camera in some exterior shots.  The Alien is a puppet; not CG. It's also CG in the scene where it runs up to Ripley and does the famous scene of hissing right in her face. That last sh...

Re: Is the thematic core of the Alien franchise Marxist and Feminist?

That's like saying Lethal Weapon has Marxist themes because the Captain threatens to demote or fire Murtaugh and Riggs if they don't shape up. Brett and Parker argue because they want extra money to do it. Their "boss" tell them its part of their contracts, their jobs already, so no extra money. Its...

Re: How would The Swarm react to a Xenomorph

The swarm is basically space locusts. They're concerned with what they can eat. The Xenomorph can't impregnate them. They can't eat the Xeno because of the acid blood and because its exoskeleton is silicon not carbon. So likely you'd see something truly terrifying. A Xenomorph with the swarm crawlin...

Re: Is the thematic core of the Alien franchise Marxist and Feminist?

Riggswolf, I would say that the critique against capitalism has a Marxist tone. Actually, the space truckers in the first movie are a kind of working class heroes, dealing with a terrible situation at work. You are right that there are no obvious Marxist visions or characters portrayed in the movie...

Re: Is the thematic core of the Alien franchise Marxist and Feminist?

Alien isn’t just a simple minded story about spaceships and xenomorphs. It’s a political franchise, even if you don’t get any explicit  political messages or subversive instructions. If you don’t get that capitalism and it’s worst aspects, in a more or less satirical way, is a part of Alien, I rest...

Re: Alien films

About films, why does many purist Alien-fans discard Alien 3?  S.M. pretty much nailed why I personally dislike Alien 3.  It starts by kicking the audience in the balls, and never really manages to get them completely back onside. There's a bunch of bald nameless murderers and rapists who the audie...
