Re: Scavenging Vehicle Parts

These are all good suggestions that I can certainly see applying in certain situations. I wasn't clear enough in the OP. The scenario that prompted it is as follows: The party revisits the site where they ambushed a Soviet convoy (from the Outnumbered random encounter). During the firefight, the ene...

Scavenging Vehicle Parts

It seems like a skilled mechanic should be able to scavenge at least some usable part(s) in less than 5 hours. From the Players Manual, p. 86: " SCAVENGING PARTS If you spend a shift scavenging parts from a functional or inoperable vehicle and make a TECH roll, you can find a number of vehicle ...

Re: Making Camp in Ruins

You could reduce "camp" prep time from a Stretch to a Shift. I think at least a little time is needed, for example to sweep broken glass and other debris off of sleeping surfaces, make sure there's adequate ventilation for a fire- that sort of thing. One would also want to make sure that t...

Re: Acquiring Languages

Finding language books and using them to build skill is a neat idea, as is allowing all PCs to know the basic phrases that the average tourist learns at the start of the campaign. I know that in past wars, US soldiers (probably all Allied shoulders) were issued small, basic language guides for the c...

Re: Acquiring Languages

Just speaking in other languages is up to you... Personally I just make my players roll for persuasion, since that's the closest we have to a general "communication" skill. I like this solution. It's simple, and reasonable. A successful Persuasion roll would mean that the PC can understan...

Re: Acquiring Languages

I see what you're saying, and your arguments make a lot of sense. When I ref'd 2.2, I house-ruled that everyone would start the campaign with at least 1 skill point in Polish (or whatever the setting country was) to reflect what they'd learned up to the start date. The 4e rules clearly state, howeve...

Acquiring Languages

In 4e, Language is pretty much all or nothing. You can either speak a language very well, or you can't speak it at all. The only wiggle room in the rules as written in the Nationality (Languages) subsection of the Character Creation chapter. It states (paraphrasing here) that everyone speaks a littl...

Re: Rad Effects

Thanks, Fenhorn. If anyone is interested, my application of the Rain of Ash (from the random encounter deck) and its immediate aftereffects are described in the latest campaign log post here:

Re: Rad Effects

Thanks, Fenhorn, for clarifying that the rules do indeed reflect that someone with more permanent rads has a greater chance of developing radiation sickness when exposed to "new" rads. I often miss things while I try to parse the rules. The other part of my question still stands. Do...

Rad Effects

After pulling the Rain of Ash card from the random encounter deck, I reread the rules for rads in the Player Handbook (p. 80) There doesn't seem to be any penalty for accumulating permanent rads (other than the sickness that can be caused by exposure to "new" rads, temporary and/or permane...
