Re: What Books Might Come after Moria?

The plan was for 1e, to create starter set with the Misty Mountains as main area. The region comes up in Heart of the Wild, Tales from Wilderland, Darkening of Mirkwood, Rivendell and Ruins of the North (all 1e), but not as main focus. I think that was the plan for Cublicle 7s's TOR 2e, rather than...

Re: Mount recovery

Depending how long the adventurers were away from their horses, they simply could look for them using Hunting or Explore. Some horses or ponies could even come back on their own.

Re: Unarmed combat … in practice

To be honest, I don’t think the normal combat mechanics are designed for Player vs. Player fights. Even during a Bout of Madness it would be too extreme for me, but if Heroes try to actually kill each other. So the brawling rules indeed be to clumsy in my opinion. I‘d just handle it narratively. If ...

Re: New Loremaster questions (yes, open to everyone)

When my players played that adventure they were quite experienced, but even they did not fight the trolls, but instead tricked them. Generally speaking TOR doesn’t use „levels“. So if you are up against trolls, you should inform your group that a fight could be deadly. But that’s the case even for e...

Re: Estelang is Gurthang?

In my game, Gurthang stays buried alongside Turin, but Estelang is forged with some remnants of Stariron. One of my players is an absolute Lord of the Rings loremaster, and he came up with a whole story of how stariron came to be, why it might be cursed if forged into weapons. So for me, the Numenor...

Re: General question for switching from MERP to a free league system

Interesting, my players thought otherwise, but maybe it was down to time and distance. A level 1 hero in Merp has to be very careful to not die in a battle against a single orc. In TOR the results of a die roll are not that erratic, there are no criticals for example. And Hope makes it easier to su...

Re: General question for switching from MERP to a free league system

I‘d like to add, that in The One Ring starting heroes feel way more capable than in Merp. Sure you don’t have spell lists, but all culture have unique abilities, that quite often substitute for spells, which were the go-to rule for special abilities back in the day.

Re: Technology in Middle Earth

Generally speaking, technology is a difficult topic, since you can't simply find analogies from our world and copy them to areas of Middle-earth. If there is one parallel, then that in our world the inventions of the ancient world (Greek, Rome) were far more advanced than anything in the Dark Ages a...

Re: How to determine Character's Age?

Though it’s not a silly question, I don’t think you need a rule for that. Cultures of Men tend to be younger, when they go on adventures, so i tend to say 20+.

The rulebook has some suggestions. Elves are interesting in that context, since their adventuring age might vary a lot.
