Not clear to me why you wouldn’t get the damage bonus from MARKSMANSHIP with a crossbow, as it’s not associated with STR. How is aiming with a crossbow any different to aiming with a longbow? Give how the skills are broken down into combat / non-combat, I wonder if having a 'Fighting' and 'Shooting' stat in their own right, linked to the combat skills, would resolve this problem.
Perhaps replacing STR with 'Fighting'? Needs a catchy name, though. Brawn?

At that point you'd be better off to ditch both attributes and make one that represents both if they are going to be so intertwined if you wanna keep it simple. It would be nice to have a generic character generation option not using a specific profession, e.g.:

5 skills
1 heroic ability
X silver worth of gear

Many more experienced BRP-adjacent players like to use this system, especially once they've tried out all the standard professions.

That's the weakness of tying skills and abilities to one attribute. Mythras gets it right, where weapon styles are based on both STR and DEX. On a related point, it would be nice to have a 'generic' previous experience option for players who prefer to build a starting character without using the available professions. This works well in Big Gold Book BRP.

I am against adding more skills but it is a minor issue compared to removing Class skills/abilities. Those define classes if removed classes loose their meaning. I too have never been fond of STR being an indicator of melee weapon skill. Hitting targets is all about AGL. As mentioned above, STR is important in terms of which weapons can be wielded, and how much damage they do (applies to both melee and missile weapons, except crossbows). Just because D&D...
