Re: Eriador and verisimilitude?

Well, there's no central authority since the fall of Arthedain in T.A. 1974. You're right of course. In my original post I forgot to add the crucial "no" with respect to central authority. I'll fix that in that posting - else it doesn't make any sense at all! Thanks :) And the amount he wrote about...

Re: Eriador and verisimilitude?

I wonder if the reason that Eriador is 'empty' is simply because there is no great centralising kingdom to describe and to interact with either Gondor or Arnor? Taking the risk of using clues from our own limited histories, was the Teutoburg forest empty in the times of the Roman Empire? Obviously ...

Re: Knowledge of Dunedin lineage?

In addition, at that time (the 30th century T.A.) Eriador was almost empty of men (beyond the Shire/Bree area) and therefore could not sustain any larger cities. In the time of Arnor, Tharbad is likely to have been the largest city (or at least among the largest) in Eriador. Given the drastic demogr...

Re: Knowledge of Dunedin lineage?

Considering this do you think the Stewards of Gondor knew of and who the Rangers were? I assume Denethor guessed who Aragorn was in their younger days together. But as general thought would prior Stewards have known? Additionally, I was thinking that Tharbad wasn't abandoned until 2911. If trade be...

Re: Eriador and verisimilitude?

Good observation! That’s plausible.
And fully accounted for and developed in-depth in the previously mentioned article :)

Re: Knowledge of Dunedin lineage?

Well…unless the fellowship takes Gilraen as patron! That would be covered what I meant with an "individual needing the trust of the Dúnedain that they would not be advertising their newfound knowledge" (to that effect). What I tried to point out is the general situation - the case you are bringing ...

Re: Eriador and verisimilitude?

This is something that interests me quite a bit as a worldbuilder and amateur historian. One thing that has always bugged me about Middle Earth is just how empty Eriador really is. Even given 2,000 years of calamity, you'd still expect a de-centralized patchwork of very small fiefdoms reminiscent o...

Re: Knowledge of Dunedin lineage?

IIRC it seems most Shire Folk and Breelanders don't know the connection between the Rangers and the Kings of Old. Appendix A of the LotR makes it IMO quite clear that the Dúnedain deliberately went into hiding in order to survive by existing incognito and re-emerge later (i.e. in Aragorn's time). I...
