Re: Not using figures!

Some people are using a hybrid solution where the "map" is a picture of the battlefield, but rather than being divided into squares it has different regions defined, with rules/notes on both those regions and the connections between them. For example, there might be a ledge that is advantageous for ...

Re: Councils too simple?

What I like about the rules for Councils for TOR 2e is that they provide a simple framework in which roleplaying can take place, but in the end, die results still measure the Loremaster character's final impression for success or failure rather than the Loremaster. I really like this because it is ...

Re: Revelation Examples

Generally I prefer Revelation events which are actual in-game events, rather than metagame constructs such as temporary mechanical penalties. In other words, when Bad Things Happen is it just bad luck/coincidence, or is it the Shadow at work? Why did the pony fall into the stream? What is up with th...

Re: Amazon Prime "Second Age" TV Series

The chances that it annoys the fan base is fairly high. You know who is going to be annoyed? PJ Movie fans. I predict they are going to look down their noses at these newcomers who only became Tolkien "fans" because of the Amazon series. They are going to have huge arguments on teh Interwebz about ...

Re: More Spellcasting Ability - New Advanced Race (Istari or Valar Kin) OR New Calling OR Virtues

Less need for Magical Elven Cultural Virtues in 2e as their Cultural Blessing achieves Magical results via spending hope? The idea being that many of the 1e magical things an elf could do via a Virtue (flashing lights! lulling people to sleep! etc) can be replicated with Magical results in 2e. Agre...

Re: Clarity requested on REARWARD STANCE

Reply to #17 The RAW quoted here does not apply in this manner. The decision for up to three enemies to engage a PC is a free choice by the LM not the player. RAW on page 97 Alpha details the case when there are MORE ENEMIES THAN PLAYER HEROES. The LM must assign ONE adversary for each close combat...

Re: Knowledge of Dunedin lineage?

It has always struck me just how spotty the history of Eriador is in the early Third Age. We don't even know the names or locations of any major Mannish cities or towns outside of Arthedain with the sole exception of Tharbad. We don't even have the names of the capitals of either Cardolan or Rhudau...

I like to picture Tharbad as the Mos Eisley of Eriador.

Re: Not a lot of opening volleys? Ranged vs Melee?

In playtesting combat, I've noticed that it's pretty rare for combatants to actually make ranged attacks. This is due to both the fact that a lot of the adversaries as printed do not "appear" to have ranged attacks? (There is some ambiguity. Does an orc soldier with a spear have only 1 spear, is it...

Re: Additional combat proficiencies and weapons

Since TOR2e has expressed an aim to streamline rules, I'd not want any wider set of weapons explicitly introduced. There are simply too many varieties of weapon in human history to ever hope to have a comprehensive set printed inside a rule book. Personally, I don't like clubs & cudgels in TOR2e. I...
