Re: Sharing useful items

The Dwarvish tools for smithing or stoneworks? Why would the Dwarf not do it himself?
Also, blacksmiths just don't share their favorite hammers.

Re: Council Skill Endeavor math odds success rate

On my phone so can’t type an essay, but agreeing with a lot of what hsi is saying. I will also acknowledge that is hard to accomplish all this without adding a lot of rule complexity, which I don’t think is in the spirit of TOR. To once again quote Jon Hodgson, the goal should be “simple rules with ...

Re: Council Skill Endeavor math odds success rate

Sorry, I had misunderstood you. The rules for the phase of interactions say "The players choose their own course of action as they see fit." However, I'm not sure that this means that players can plan ahead a series of rolls. I think that choosing the skill for each subsequent roll should depend on...

Re: Council Skill Endeavor math odds success rate

In the algorithm for Councils, there is no feedback: the results of the dice rolls are not used as inputs back into that algorithm. I would say this is not entirely true. During the Interaction phase "the Loremaster chooses whether the audience of the Player-heroes is Reluctant, Open, or Friendly...

Re: Council Skill Endeavor math odds success rate

This makes me realize something about Councils that I've been circling around but hasn't fully formed into a coherent thought. First, although this is well done, the reality is a bit more complicated because different characters will participate, who all have different skill ranks and TNs. Still, it...

Re: Virtue of the Rangers of the North: Ways of the Wild

I think it’s interesting that this virtue would allow an experienced Ranger to guide, for example, 4 freshly rolled Hobbits through the wilderness. Not sure how much fun that would be for those 4 players, but it’s interesting. Could also be used for a duet-play version of the same thing, in which th...

Re: Councils - My House Rules

Ok, version 17.2: 1. LM has enumeration of goals/preferences as before 2. When a player makes a choice that either aligns with or contradicts those goals/preferences, as determined by the LM, the LM signals this by telling them to roll favoured or ill-favoured. (If the player is already using a favo...

Re: Councils - My House Rules

It reads as if a bit more variety in the outcomes is more exciting or dramatic, making the gaming experience (even) more satisfying. If the L'M decides, in advance, on the personality or the aims of those being spoken to, then the L'M can count use of a particular skill as a double success, or a ze...

Re: Councils - My House Rules

I've had time to reflect more on this. While in theory I like the idea that a successes/failures at different skills affect the direction of the conversation, and thus lead to certain other skills being more or less advantageous, I think that in practice what it means is that there is still a determ...

Re: A couple of council skill use questions..

In our world it would indeed be weird to suddenly burst into song during a meeting. I speak from experience. It would be weird to burst into song, but I’ve quoted movies and song lyrics in meetings, to positive effect. I think that’s a rough analogue. It’s a way of saying, “We have a shared experie...
