Anyone have any ideas how to handle this? Given how lethal the system is, I feel reticent to leave this entirely up to my own fiat. A NPC panic at an inopportune time could easily spell death for a character. Similarly, an NPC keeping it together could totally save a character. This is probably less...

Roll20 is great for helping with this. I put all the maps and most of the rules in mine for quick reference. You can send whisper messages to PCs and have handouts set that you can show to only specific PCs.
