I think the idea is to give 2 gear dice (from the shield) but deduct two skill dice. Modifiers (-1, +2, etc.) always come from skill dice. Yeah. isn't that just worse in every way? Well, at my table, the player with the scepter carried it around till he figured out why he got hurt every quarter day. He wielded that scepter in the face of everyone in his way, trying to manipulate them and with that extra D12 bonus to every roll, there wasn’t much he could not talk people into. ...

I rule it that it drains when it's being used - which for me means wielded. It won't drain being in the bag, backpack or at cart. But if you use it - you get drained that quarter when you used it. My temptation with a torch would be to give it a gear bonus but also a -1 or -2 penalty. That way you can track if it breaks in the rolls but also capture that it’s not actually a weapon.

After the wound has healed, I might allow it. Use the roll of a dice to see how much of the arm that’s missing. Maybe only a small shield and a crafting roll to fit it to the arm... More fun and character development that way than to just make them inefficient in combat, thus making the player want ...
